工作生活质量研究在管理心理学中有关改进工作条件，减少心理压力，促进生活改善，合理安排福利的研究。这种研究的目的在于使工作本身对人具有吸引力。在管理心理学中不少研究证明，金钱刺激作为激励手段并不能保证职工持续的工作积极性。因此，作为内在激励手段的工作生活质量研究便日益受到重视。工作生活质量可以有多方面的含义，它包括客观工作生活条件的改善和工作本身的丰富化,以及为职工提供学习发展的机会,成长远景等。中华人民共和国成立后制定了劳动保护、公费医疗、对女工产假与哺乳期的照顾等制度,还为职工提供了交通、伙食、住房的各种优惠条件，这些都体现了国家对职工工作生活质量的关心。国际劳工组织曾提出工作生活质量的 7项基本原则：①职业应在专业上适合于从事工作的个人；②职业应有保证，要有持续的就业；③有组织工会的权力，有参加集体谈判的权力：④工资与薪水应当公平并与职工的责任相联系，对职工的绩效、服务和更多的任务要给以奖励；⑤提供福利以保证工人及其家属的医疗保健，老年及丧葬。这种福利应与国家的保证相结合；⑥有休息、娱乐的闲暇时间，并通过合宜的假日、休假和脱产学习的机会使人们有提高发展的可能；⑦工作条件应清洁、安全并且不危害工人及其家属的健康。欧洲经济共同体设立了改进工作生活质量的欧洲基金会、借以推动有关工作。国际卫生组织号召其成员国采取措施以改进工人的健康。在工业发达国家，如瑞典、德国、法国、澳大利亚等都通过法令的形式保证职工的工作生活质量。还有一些专门从事研究工作生活质量的组织，如设在伦敦的"工作生活质量国际委员会"、设在美国的"工作生活质量美国中心"、设在瑞典的"工作生活问题中心"等。
