继电控制系统利用具有继电特性的元件进行控制的自动控制系统。所谓继电特性是指在输入信号作用下输出仅为通、断等几个状态的特性。继电控制也称通断控制。例如，电炉温度调节中根据炉温是否超过规定值而断开或接通电源。这种只有通、断两个状态的控制又称双位式控制。对于继电控制型伺服系统，继电控制是指驱动电源的全部电压按照控制偏差值符号的正负，正向或反向地加到执行电动机上。为避免正反向之间的持续振荡，在正向和反向之间常设置一个死区。继电控制中使用的元件并不限于电磁式继电器，也可用别的手段来实现继电特性。例如，在双位式温度调节中，常采用双金属片作为敏感元件，温度变化时双金属片因两部分金属的膨胀系数不同而弯曲变形，接通或断开触点。其他如液压和气动阀等也是具有继电特性的元件。继电控制系统的主要分析方法有相平面法和描述函数法。继电控制系统的主要优点是控制装置比较简单。对于同样的功率，继电控制装置的重量和体积在各类控制系统中几乎是最小的，所以广泛应用于飞行控制。在最速控制系统和最省燃料控制系统中，控制规律也可采用继电特性来实现。继电控制系统的主要缺点是控制的非线性。改善的方法是使继电系统线性化，通过改变继电控制的非线性特性使系统具有近似的线性特性。几乎所有的继电伺服系统都是线性化的继电系统。线性化有振荡线性化和利用反馈达到线性化两种方法。①振荡线性化在继电系统上外加强迫的高频振荡信号,使继电器的等效特性呈现为线性特性。强迫振荡还有利于克服输出机构的静摩擦力。对于系统的输出，强迫的高频振荡只引起很小的影响，通常可以忽略。②利用反馈使继电器在滑动工作状态下工作当继电器接通时，同时接通反馈电路使继电器输入端加入负向电压，来抵消输入信号的作用，使继电器释放。继电器释放后，反馈电压消失，继电器重新吸上。这样不断地接通和释放，使继电系统的输出近似地跟踪输入信号的变化。继电器的这种工作状态称滑动工作状态。在滑动工作状态下，系统具有近似的线性特性。飞行控制中自动驾驶仪的伺服机构大多采用这种原理。
