创造性思维以新的方式解决问题的思维活动,与再造性思维(见思维)相对应。创造性思维的基本特征为新颖性。它要求打破惯常的解决问题的方式，将过去的经验重新加以综合，给问题以新的解决。创造性思维突出地表现于科学发现和发明、文学艺术的创作以及其他各种创造性活动。格式塔心理学的创始者M.韦特海默认为，创造性思维与新的格式塔的形成有关，是以顿悟(见问题解决)的方式实现的。S.A.梅德尼克则认为，创造性思维是形成联想因素的新的组合,以满足特定的需要,并且创造性程度与新组合起来的各种因素之间的远近距离有直接关系。近年来，一些心理学家将创造性思维与发散性思维联系起来。发散性思维与会聚性思维相对应，是J.P.吉尔福德于1967年作为智力结构的因素提出来的。会聚性思维是将各种信息会聚起来得出问题的一个解答。这种思维通常应用于存在一个正确答案的问题，如"哪座山峰是世界最高峰？"发散性思维则沿着不同方向去探索问题的多种解决，如"你能想出厨刀有多少用途？""马铃薯与胡萝卜究竟有多少方面相似？"通过对这类问题的回答,可以得到回答的数量、灵活程度和新异的成分,它们相应地构成发散性思维的3个维量:流畅性、变通性和独创性。一些心理学家认为,这3个维量构成创造性思维的重要内容。但发散性思维与会聚性思维是互相联系的，发散出的许多解决方案，经过衡量、检验后选择其中一个，又依赖于会聚性思维。一般认为创造性思维经历4个阶段:①准备期：认识问题的特点，深入研究迄今的各种资料和观点，从各方面进行探索；②孕育期:经过反复思考得不到解答时,转而从事其他活动，从表面上看,问题往往被搁置,但实际上对问题的思考常是无意识地进行着；③明朗期：新的问题解决方案突然出现，往往是在无意中或受到偶然事件的触发而豁然开朗,表现出灵感或顿悟；④验证期:详细地论述新的解决方案，予以修订和验证。运用类比推理对创造性思维有重要的作用。对陌生的事物有意识地持熟悉态度,以熟悉的事物与之比较,或者对熟悉的事物有意识地持陌生态度，用联系较少的事物与之比较，都有助于发现事物的新的方面，促进新的解决方案的形成。这种以其他事物来引导问题的解决称作原型启发，起着启发作用的事物即为原型。类比和原型启发以至全部创造性思维都离不开想象，特别是创造想象。利用已有的感性形象创造出新的形象，不仅可以使人们设想未来的方案,而且能够激励人们进行创造。创造性思维依赖于人的全部认识活动和智力的发展，但智力较高的人不一定都有创造。发明创造受社会条件的制约。然而，一个人具有的强烈的事业心、好奇心和坚强的意志，对创造性思维的进行是极其重要的。
