洄游海洋鱼类因季节的变化、寻找食物、生殖等原因，要周期性结群作长距离的定向游动，叫做洄游。生活在淡水中的鱼，生殖时游向海洋产卵，叫降海性洄游，如鳗鱼。海洋里的鱼类，繁殖时要到淡水中产卵，这种现象叫溯河性洄游，如大马哈鱼。鱼类的洄游是鱼类运动的一种特殊形式，它与一般运动截然不同。一般的运动都是条件反射运动，常是由外界的刺激所引起的运动。洄游则是一些鱼类的主动、定期、定向、集群、具有种的特点的水平移动。洄游也是一种周期性运动，随着鱼类生命周期各个环节的推移，每年重复进行。洄游是长期以来鱼类对外界环境条件变化的适应结果，也是鱼类内部生理变化发展到一定程度，对外界刺激的一种必然反应。通过洄游，更换各生活时期的生活水域，以满足不同生活时期对生活条件的需要，顺利完成生活史中各重要生命活动。洄游的距离随种类而异，为了寻找适宜的外界条件和特定的产卵场所，有的种类要远游几千公里的距离。影响鱼类洄游的因素很多，因而每次洄游的目的也各不相同。按洄游的动力，可分为被动洄游和主动洄游；按洄游的方向，可分为向陆洄游和离陆洄游降河（海）洄游和溯河洄游等。根据生命活动过程中的作用可划分为生殖洄游、索饵洄游和越冬洄游。这三种洄游共同组成鱼类的洄游周期。但不是所有洄游性鱼类的洄游周期相同，有的鱼类只有生殖洄游和索饵洄游，有的鱼类越冬场与索饵场在一起或附近，有的索饵场就在生殖场所附近。鱼类不同生长阶段的洄游周期也不同，幼鱼和成鱼的洄游周期、洄游路线、洄游时间往往也有所不同。
