热质说历史上关于热的本质的一种错误理论。这个学说认为热是一种自相排斥的、无重量的流质,称作热质或热素。它不生不灭,可透入一切物体之中。一个物体是"热"还是"冷",由它所含热质的多少决定。较热的物体含有较多的热质,冷热不同的两个物体接触时,热质便从较热的物体排入较冷的物体,直到两者的温度相同时为止。一个物体所减少的热质,恰好等于另一物体所增加的热质。17,D.G.华伦海特改良了温度计并定出了华氏温标以后,热学才正式走上了实验科学的道路。J.布莱克澄清了热和温度这两个混淆了的概念,他将热称为热的份量,温度称为热的强度。他认为:热质与冰结合而成为水,热质再与水结合而成为汽。热质说就作为早期解释热学实验的简单学说而为一些科学家所用。热质说在启发和解释量热学的实验方面曾起过积极的作用,它能成功地说明混合量热法的规律,即两个温度不相等的物体混合以后达到相同温度时,如果没有向周围散失热量,其中一个物体所失去的热量恰好等于另一物体所得到的热量。1798年,朗福德了解到钻炮膛生热而进行了摩擦产生热的实验,从而证明了所产生的热量同所作的功成正比,排斥了热质说。但是热质说仍继续存在约半个世纪。后来S.卡诺在用卡诺循环导出卡诺定理时,结论正确,但还是凭借热质说。直到能量转换和守恒定律建立以后,确认热是物质运动的一种形式,热质说才被彻底否定(见热的本质、热力学第一定律)。
