瑶族瑶族中国少数民族。主要分布在广西、湖南、云南、广东、贵州等省区。人口213.4万（1990）。有本民族语言，但支系较复杂，有近一半人使用的语言属于汉藏语系苗瑶语族瑶语支；有2/5人使用的语言属苗语支；还有部分人的语言属壮侗语族侗水语支。无文字，一般通用汉文。关于瑶族的族源，大多数人认为与古代的“荆蛮”、“长沙武陵蛮”、“莫瑶”、“蛮瑶”等有渊源关系。身着民族服饰的瑶族妇女瑶族以农业为主，兼营林业和狩猎。民主改革前，社会经济发展不平衡，可分3类：第一类以农为主兼营林、副业；第二类以林为主，兼营农副业；第三类保留有少量的原始氏族残余和采用“刀耕火种”的耕作方法。瑶族人民精于织染和刺绣，瑶斑布在国内享有盛名。男女服装主要用青、蓝土布制作。男子穿对襟无领短衫、长裤或过膝短裤；广西南丹瑶族男子喜着绣边白裤；广东海南瑶族男子喜留发髻，插雉毛以装饰，并以红布帕包头。妇女穿无领大襟上衣、长裤、短裙或百褶裙，在服装的周边饰以挑花、刺绣。头上喜戴各种银饰。少女、未婚或已婚妇女从头饰上有区别。以玉米、大米、红薯为主食。黄豆、饭豆、南瓜、辣椒和家禽家畜佐餐。住房有竹舍、木屋、茅房和小部分泥墙瓦屋。行一夫一妻制，一般不与外族通婚，招赘习俗普遍。节日较多，有大小之分。大节日有盘王节、春节、达努节、中元节、社王节、清明节等，小节日几乎每月都有。瑶族民间文学源远流长，大量作品口头相传。少量有手抄本和唱本。手抄本《评王券牒》(又称《过山榜》)是民间重要的历史文献。对研究瑶族的历史和迁徙有重要价值。有些地区的瑶族信奉原始宗教；有些地区则信奉巫教和道教。
