文化传播一种文化中的文化集丛或文化元素从其发祥地扩散到不同地方而被模仿、采借和接受的社会现象和过程。传播一词是物理学、化学、生物学中普遍应用的术语，指的是物质向外扩散的情形。文化人类学家借用这个术语来研究文化的发展及分布。文化传播始见于英国文化人类学家E.B.泰勒1871年的《原始文化》一书。他提出各地文化之所以有相似之处，是由于文化传播造成的。例如，印度的佛教文化传入中国，关于马的文化丛从欧洲传播到北美印第安人部落等。对于一个民族或地区的文化形成来说，除了发明产生，就是传播得来。仔细考察各地文化，在众多文化元素和文化丛中，纯属本地发明的并不很多，大多是由他处直接或间接传播而来，因此世界各地文化有许多相似之处。文化人类学家根据这种相似性，发现文化质料也和其他物质质料一样，具有向外扩散的本性。一种文化元素或文化丛被发明出来，必然要向四周扩散即文化传播。文化传播的过程 文化人类学家R.林顿把文化传播过程分为 3个阶段：①接触与显现阶段。一种或几种外来的文化元素在一个社会中显现出来，被人注意。②选择阶段。对于显现出来的文化元素进行批评、选择、决定采纳或拒绝。③采纳融合阶段。把决定采纳的文化元素融合于本民族文化之中。从地理空间看，文化传播是由文化中心区向四周扩散，根据传播途中信息递减的一般规律，离文化中心区越远的地方，越不能保持文化元素的原形。当一种文化元素传播到另一个地区以后，它已不是原来的形态和含义，在传播和采纳过程中已被修改过。因此，两地文化只有相似处，完全相同的文化十分少见。文化传播的方式与媒介 文化传播的方式有两种,一种是直接的采借，把外来的文化元素或文化丛直接接纳过来。另一种是间接传播，即一种文化元素或文化丛传入一个地区，引起那里人们的思考，由此引发传入地的人创造一种新的文化。这种现象被称为"刺激性传播"。文化传播的媒介主要是人的迁移和流动，尤以人群的迁移更为重要。移民、战争、入侵和占领等是文化传播的重要途径。移民带来异族文化，战胜国总是要把本国文化强加给战败国。此外，通商、旅游以及其他人员的流动，也是传播文化的重要媒介。在当代，由于交通通讯技术手段的发达，文化传播的媒介增多，不一定依赖于人的迁移和流动。世界范围内的文化传播正通过各种途径，以前所未有的规模和速度进行着，由此必然导致世界文化的同质性日益增强。文化传播是引起社会变迁的重要原因之一，有批判地采借和吸入外来文化是实行社会改革，推动社会进步的必要条件。
