缝隙天线在导体面上开缝形成的天线，也称为开槽天线。典型的缝隙形状是长条形的，长度约为半个波长。缝隙可用跨接在它窄边上的传输线馈电，也可由波导或谐振腔馈电。这时，缝隙上激励有射频电磁场，并向空间辐射电磁波。无限大和无限薄的理想导电平面上的缝隙称为理想缝隙。理想缝隙上的电场与缝隙的长边垂直，其振幅在缝隙的两端下降为零。这一电场分布与具有相同尺寸的导体振子（称为互补振子）上的磁场分布(即电流分布)完全一样。根据电磁场的对偶性可知，理想缝隙所辐射的电磁场与互补振子产生的电磁场具有相同的结构，只是振子的电场矢量对应于缝隙的磁场矢量，振子的磁场矢量对应于缝隙的电场矢量而已。因此。缝隙在远区的电场矢量E和磁场矢量H的方向如图中a,缝隙在yz平面内的方向图为8字形,而在xy平面内的方向图为圆形。理想缝隙的输入阻抗与互补振子的输入阻抗之积为z娿/4，z0为周围媒质的波阻抗。对于有限导体平面或曲面上的实际缝隙，只要导体面尺寸比波长大得多，特别是缝隙窄边方向的尺寸较大，曲率较小，则其基本特性便近似于理想缝隙。利用多个缝隙可构成缝隙阵。图中 b就是在矩形波导窄壁上开缝的缝隙阵天线。缝隙阵有两类：谐振阵和非谐振阵。谐振阵中各缝隙是同相激励的；非谐振阵中各缝隙有一定相位差，因而其最大辐射方向不是在阵的法线方向，而是与法线成一角度。非谐振阵的优点是频带较宽。缝隙天线一般用于微波波段的雷达、导航、电子对抗和通信等设备中，并因能制成共形结构而特别适宜于用在高速飞行器上。中国第一颗人造卫星就使用了缝隙天线。60年代以来，波导缝隙阵天线（包括形成相位扫描或频率扫描的面阵），因易于控制各缝隙的激励以得到特定的口径场分布，结构简便，已获得迅速的发展和应用。超低副瓣天线（副瓣电平低于－40分贝）就是在60年代后期用波导缝隙阵首先实现的。
