石油工业采掘和加工天然石油、油页岩及天然气的工业部门。包括油、气勘探，油、气田开发，石油炼制，油、气集输和储运等多种专业。石油、天然气的发现和利用,已有几千年的历史,但形成一门工业,只有一百多年的历史。进入20世纪后,尤其近40年来，随着工业、农业、交通运输业、国防以及科学技术的现代化,对石油和天然气的需求日益增长,油、气工业发展很快。由于油、气在国民经济各部门的广泛利用，引起了世界能源消费构成的巨大变化。直到50年代,世界能源消费,还主要依靠煤炭；进入60年代，世界能源消费构成已逐渐转向石油和天然气；60年代中期以后，煤炭已退居油、气之下占第二位。石油作为一种高热值燃料和有机化工原料，是其他能源难以取代的。近30年来，世界上许多国家依靠石油、天然气，大大提高了生产力。中国利用石油的历史悠久,石油资源丰富。但是,在半殖民地半封建的旧中国，石油工业十分落后，地质勘探工作非常薄弱，探明的石油储量很少；国内用油主要依赖进口。1949年以前，全国只有甘肃玉门老君庙、新疆独山子、陕西延长三个油田和四川圣灯山、石油沟两个气田，以及辽宁的两个页岩油厂，年产原油仅12万吨，占能源总产量的0.7％。1949年中华人民共和国建立以后，石油工业有了很大发展。石油的勘探与开发取得了巨大进展，先后开发了克拉玛依、大庆、胜利、大港、辽河、华北、中原等油田。到1984年，中国石油系统职工已达110多万人,形成了一个从勘探、开发、原油加工、机械制造、油田和管道建设到科研设计等方面在内的门类齐全的工业部门。石油产量大幅度增加，1978年原油产量已突破1亿吨，1985年达到1.25亿吨，居世界第6位。中国生产的原油，除供应国内需要外，还向许多国家出口。石油工业已成为给国民经济提供能源、为社会主义经济建设积累资金的重要部门。
