凉水塔用空气以直接接触方式使热水冷却的设备。凉水塔内发生的冷却过程遵循水对空气增湿的原理。在工厂中，为了节约用水和控制水质,把使用后已变热的冷却水(热水)进行冷却然后循环使用,而凉水塔则是最常用的热水冷却设备。在逆流操作的凉水塔内,热水从塔顶淋下,与上升的空气进行热量传递和质量传递。在塔的上部，一般热水的温度和相应的平衡水汽分压都较高，热量和质量由热水传给空气（见图）。在塔的下部，水温降到气温以下，但比空气湿球温度高，这时由于空气仍是不饱和状态，水继续汽化为水蒸气使空气增湿，进行质量传递，其所需的汽化热，部分由空气传热给水流进行热量传递，不足部分的热由水本身温降提供，因此水温可继续降低。当塔高足够时，水温可能接近的极限是进口空气的湿球温度。凉水塔内装有填料，以增加水与空气的接触表面积。常用的填料形式有点波填料、斜波填料、蜂窝填料以及各种形状的板条。气液两相在凉水塔内的流动方向有多种，但常用的是逆流。为了加强热湿交换，可提高空气流速，则需要采用轴流式风机（见流体输送机械）进行强制通风。
