校外活动由校外教育机构或社会团体领导和组织的、在学校教育教学计划范围之外对学生进行的多样化的教育活动。中华人民共和国成立前，国民党政府没有专门为儿童设立校外教育机构。少数由社会团体或个人举办的贫儿教育救济、虚弱儿童教养等活动,属社会慈善事业。宋庆龄创办的中国福利基金会及其儿童福利站在中国共产党支持下，克服种种困难，才在一些失学儿童中开展了识字、图书阅读及文化娱乐活动。中华人民共和国成立后，为少年儿童设立了多种校外教育机构，许多科学家、艺术家、劳动模范、战斗英雄和优秀运动员，都热情关心和指导少年儿童的校外活动。校外活动是学校教育同社会结合，促进学生全面发展的必需的教育补充形式。校外活动的具体任务是：①对广大少年儿童进行共产主义思想品德教育，培养他们具有高尚的情操和文明的行为。②扩大视野，激发求知欲，丰富他们的文化科学知识。③培养和发展少年儿童在科技、文艺、体育等多方面的兴趣与才能。④组织有益于少年儿童身心健康的文化娱乐活动，使他们的课余生活丰富多采。校外活动的特点是在自愿的基础上充分发挥少年儿童的主动性、积极性，让少年儿童独立自主地开展各项感兴趣的活动。活动的内容有较大的灵活性，活动的方式以实践为主，通过实践发展少年儿童的创造才能。校外活动的内容大致包括：政治教育活动，科学技术活动,文学艺术活动,文娱体育活动和公益劳动等。它的形式多种多样，可分为：①群众性活动。如时事政治报告会、科普讲座、节日和纪念日集会、各种主题活动、参观、旅游、夏令营活动、集体公益劳动、艺术或体育表演等。②小组活动。这是根据各人的兴趣、爱好和特长组成的各种专门小组，人数由 4、5人至 10多人不等，在辅导员或教师的指导下，定期开展活动。如音乐、舞蹈、戏剧等文艺小组，航模、船模、无线电、微型电子计算机及其他科技小组、体育小组等。③个人活动。这是根据各人的兴趣和才能，在教师的指导下，个别进行的活动。如学生独立阅读书籍,进行体育锻炼和游戏,独立进行某种科学小试验、科技制作等。 中国的校外教育机构可分综合性的与专门性的两类。综合性的校外教育机构包括多种工作任务和活动内容，如儿童活动中心、少年宫、少年之家、儿童活动站、儿童公园和附设在成人公园内的儿童游戏场地、少先队夏令营等。专门性的校外教育机构是专为开展某项活动而设立的。如儿童图书馆、儿童阅览室、儿童影剧院、少年科技站、儿童铁路、少年农科站、少年业余体育学校、少年儿童广播站等。(见彩图)
