城市群集中于一定地域内的规模、职能各不相同，彼此密切联系而又相对独立的若干城市和城镇。又称城镇群。是近代以来城市形态的一种。这一概念最初由英国地理学家P.格迪斯于19提出,用以描述最初相互分离,随着不断扩展而联结起来的若干聚落的建成区连续体。随着现代城市化的发展，这一概念已用来指城市群这种城市分布和组合的形态。城市群中的各个城市或城镇在距离上相互分离，中间大多隔有绿带，交通便利。城市群的分布和组合主要有两种形式：①以大城市为核心，周围伴有若干中、小城镇的团状群组，称为大城市集群区。纽约、巴黎、莫斯科等大都市及其周围地区多属这一形态。②由若干座规模相仿的城市为中心，组成多中心带状或块状的城市群。如荷兰的兰斯塔德，在6000多平方公里范围内,集中了3个50～100万人口的大城市，3个10～30万人口的中等城市，以及众多的小型城镇和滨海旅游胜地，这些城镇彼此之间既有明显的职能分工和专业化特点，又紧密联系。又如联邦德国的鲁尔区，主要工业中心是由15个城市构成的一个巨大工业区。苏联的顿巴斯地区、中国的辽宁中部地区等，都是世界闻名的城镇密集地带。目前在欧洲，城市群已成为城市居民点分布的主要形式。随着世界城市化进程的发展，预计城市群分布的范围也将日益扩展。
