交易费用交易费用概念是科斯在1937年发表的《企业的性质》一文中提出的。早期交易费用概念显然具有初步认识事物时认识上处于混沌状态的特点。科斯在提出交易费用时，实际上用了两种不同的概念。在行文中，他一方面对交易费用给出了一个描述性定义，指出交易费用是与发现交易对象、发现相对价格、讨价还价、订立契约和执行契约有关的费用，但是同时他还将交易费用看作是运用市场机制的费用。1969年阿罗在研究保险市场逆向选择行为和市场机制运行效率问题时，正式肯定和发展了科斯的后一种意见，明确指出交易费用就是市场机制的运行费用，甚至把交易费用进一步归结为利用经济制度的费用。这是对交易费用的最高概括，使得交易费用概念的外延迅速扩展。
