康复心理学运用心理学的知识、方法和技术设施，协助残疾者、病患者以及老年人消除因残疾、病患或器官和功能缺陷等所造成的心理问题，以便最大限度地恢复其适应能力的医学心理学分支。康复一词，源于拉丁语rehabilitatio,意思是恢复到原来正常或良好状态。1898年美国克利夫兰市成立克利夫兰康复中心，是康复心理作为一项专门的研究课题和工作任务的标志。第一次世界大战结束后，美国专门为残疾者草拟了"国家职业康复计划"。19,美国国会曾为残废军人制定了一项特别的职业康复法案，1954年美国又对此法案进行了修订，把职业康复、社会康复、心理康复以及教育康复融为一体，进行全面考察和统筹安排，实行综合管理，丰富了康复工作的内容和服务范围，提高了康复工作的效应。由于心理学家、社会学家及教育学家相继加入康复医疗工作，有力地推动了康复心理学的发展。各种形式的机构，如社区康复中心、康复医院、职业训练中心、监护工厂等，均采用了多种心理治疗技术及咨询方式，及时改善或解决患者、残疾者或老年人产生的心理问题。中国传统医学理论对于康复过程中的综合治疗和康复心理工作十分重视，其中有不少朴素珍贵的理论观点和独特的医案记载。例如，《素问·异法方宜论》中提出，"故圣人杂合而治，各得其所宜"，强调不同的病情应采用不同的综合治疗手段；《名医类案》中提出的理喻和解释的理论，在精神疾病治疗中，结合静坐沉思可获得较好疗效。一些有悠久历史和独具特色的传统治疗方法，如气功、导引、太极拳、八段锦等，对于身心康复有着明显的效果。康复心理学的研究对象十分广泛，包括身体残疾和精神障碍者、慢性病人、老年人等。其探讨的课题和工作的主要内容有：①制定医疗康复计划，对丧失能力的康复对象，除采用物理治疗、工娱治疗和体育疗法等使其尽量恢复功能外，同时给予心理治疗和心理护理，加速康复进程，使其心理的适应功能得到恢复，达到康复所需要的最佳心理状态；②进行职业康复训练，对有潜在能力的残疾者给予适当的职业训练，直接改善身心功能，帮助他们获得一定的独立生活能力；③开办监护性工厂，使康复对象在特殊照顾的环境中，从事集体生产劳动,增加与社会的接触,提高社会适应的能力；④安排各种形式的特殊教育措施，以减轻康复对象的痛苦和困难；⑤把开展心理咨询看作是康复心理的关键环节（见心理咨询）。⑥通过各种心理测验和鉴定，为康复对象提供相应的措施和指导。
