阶调复制以原稿为基础，通过色调的分解、传递和合成过程即将原稿的阶调复制成印刷品的阶调的全过程。画面的阶调有两方面的含义：一是指画面从最亮到最暗的亮度范围，或者说是密度反差范围；一是指在可复制的范围内可辨别的亮度等级，或者说层次的多少。阶调复制是产品质量的关键，也是评价产品质量的重要标志之一。在复制的不同阶段，阶调的概念和表现有所区别：原稿的阶调。一般指原稿上最亮和最暗的亮度差别，不同的原稿亮度差别也不同。在正常条件下，透射原稿的亮度范围相对大，反射原稿的亮度范围相对小。两者都可用密度反差表示，也可分别用透射率或反射率范围表示。分色或加网分色片的阶调。在原稿阶调符合要求的前提下，分色或加网分色片的阶调是拷贝、晒版、打样及印刷品阶调的基础。采用照相制版工艺，从制作蒙片时阶调就要适当控制。因此,分色或加网分色的阶调在工艺设计中就应有明确的数据。连续调分色的阴片用密度范围表示,加网分色的阴图用网点面积的百分比表示,也可用积分密度表示。拷贝过程的阶调。连续调阴片加网拷贝的阶调取决于连续调阴片的密度范围和接触网屏的密度反差范围。网点阴图的拷贝主要取决于本身的网点面积及感光材料的性能。拷贝属于网点传递过程,应是忠实地传递,但在一般条件下阶调会有所伸长。用网点面积的百分比表示。晒版的阶调。晒版是将原版上的阶调传递到版材上的过程，最理想的是忠实传递。由于原版网点质量、版材性能、曝光显影等条件的影响，传递过程中会略有变化，阶调趋向伸长。打样或印刷品的阶调。是将晒在印版上的图像传递到纸或其他承印物上的过程。一方面由印版阶调决定,另一方面也受印刷适性条件的制约。总的趋势是网点扩大、阶调伸长。印刷品的阶调。是由纸张的最高白度和各印版实地密度叠加起来的最大密度决定的。因此，印刷品的亮度范围是由印刷的适性条件而确定的。在此范围内再合理地分配原稿上的层次，一般的规律是高光调略有强调或保持，中间调保持或略有压缩，暗调一般处于压缩状态。总的看，印刷品的亮度范围不如原稿大，特别是透射原稿压缩得更多，这是印刷品不如原稿明快的主要原因。
