旋涡泵靠旋转叶轮对液体的作用力,在液体运动方向上给液体以冲量来传递动能以实现输送液体的泵。图为旋涡泵的工作原理。叶轮为一等厚圆盘,在它外缘的两侧有很多径向小叶片。在与叶片相应部位的泵壳上有一等截面的环形流道,整个流道被一个隔舌分成为吸、排两方,分别与泵的吸、排管路相联。泵内液体随叶轮一起回转时产生一定的离心力,向外甩入泵壳中的环形流道,并在流道形状的限制下被迫回流,重新自叶片根部进入后面的另一叶道。因此,液体在叶片与环形流道之间的运动迹线,对静止的泵壳来说是一种前进的螺旋线;而对于转动的叶轮来说则是一种后退的螺旋线。旋涡泵即因液体的这种旋涡运动而得名。液体能连续多次进入叶片之间获取能量,直到最后从排出口排出。旋涡泵的工作有些像多级离心泵,但旋涡泵没有像离心泵蜗壳或导叶那样的能量转换装置。旋涡泵主要是通过多次连续作功的方式把能量传递给液体,所以能产生较高的压力。在能量传递过程中,由于液体的多次撞击,能量损失较大,泵的效率较低,一般为20~50%。旋涡泵只适用于要求小流量(1~40米3/时)、较高扬程(可达250米)的场合,如消防泵、飞机加油车上的汽油泵、小锅炉给水泵等。旋涡泵可以输送高挥发性和含有气体的液体,但不应用来输送粘度大于7帕·秒的较稠液体和含有固体颗粒的不洁净液体。
