多光谱扫描仪利用光学机械扫描方式测量景物辐射的遥感仪器。景物辐射来自物体对阳光和天空背景光的反射或物体自身的热辐射等，光谱范围从可见光到红外波段。辐射的光谱特性反映物体的性质和状态。多光谱扫描仪是从红外行扫描仪演变来的。60年代为了获取红外图像，用红外探测器扫描方式对景物的红外辐射逐点进行探测，形成图像。这种仪器用于航空遥感（见遥感技术）时仅在与飞行方向相垂直的方向上作行扫描，利用飞机运动而形成二维图像，故称行扫描仪。只要在这种扫描仪上加上分光器件和适当的光电探测器，就可以在很宽的光谱范围内工作，发展成多光谱扫描仪。多光谱扫描仪由扫描反射镜、聚光系统、分光部件、光电探测器、辐射定标器以及信号放大、编码和处理的电子系统构成。从景物来的辐射，经扫描镜反射进入聚光系统会聚成像，由分光部件（滤光片、棱镜或光栅等）分光，分成若干波段，由相应的光电探测器（如光电倍增管、硅光二极管、锑化铟探测器、碲镉汞探测器等）分别接收并转变成电信号，经电子系统处理、传输、记录，最后可回放成图片，或处理成计算机兼容磁带，供用户使用。多光谱扫描仪适用于航空和航天遥感，其性能要求视应用目的和使用条件而定。为提高多光谱扫描仪的空间分辨率，人们正在研制电荷耦合器件的固态自扫描的多光谱扫描仪。
