书目检索服务系统美国书目检索服务处情报技术公司经营的综合性联机情报服务系统,简称BRS系统。该系统是在纽约州立大学生物医学交流网的基础上发展起来的，创立于1976年，总部设在纽约附近的莱瑟姆。到1988年底,BRS中央计算机存储有各个数据库生产者提供的150 多个数据库，共8000多万件记录，包括期刊论文、专利、标准、政府报告、学位论文和产品目录等文献资料。除了学位论文数据库可上溯到1861年的论文外，大都是60～70年代的资料，世界各地用户通过通信网络，使用兼容的终端机或微机，可以从数据库中检索到有关医药保健、生物科学、工程技术、商业经济、社会科学和人文科学等领域的当前和历史的情报。BRS 系统的数据库中有些和其他联机系统的数据库相同，也有些是BRS独家经营的,其中产品和标准情报颇具特色。BRS 早先运营的书目型数据库仅提供文献题录(篇名、著作、出处等)和摘要。现在，数值型和全文数据库日渐增多。BRS 的基本功能同其他联机系统相似，一般用单词或词组作检索词，用"与"、"或"、"非"标准逻辑算符和位置算符把多个检索词加以组配，按规定的格式输入，系统立即显示命中的记录数，输入显示或打印指令即可获得输出的情报(即检索结果)。输入脱机打印指令，系统在夜间用激光打印机打印，第二天寄出。为适应联机情报市场的需要,BRS不断扩充功能，增加以下服务项目：① 定题服务(SDI)，用户只需一次输入检索式，数据库每次更新时便自动执行,把最新信息检索出来,邮寄给用户。②黄昏后服务(BRS/After Dark)，有30个数据库，用户可在下午6时至午夜使用,收费低廉。③脱机检索，在BRS大型数据库中,用户将联机检索策略暂存在系统中，利用晚上时间进行检索、输出处理，第二天寄出打印件，这样可以节省时间和费用。④提供两种检索技术方式。一种是指令操作方式，适于经过培训有经验的用户使用；另一种是菜单驱动方式，适合于没有经验的用户使用。两种方式可灵活使用。⑤综合和分类。将由不同数据库检得的结果,合并到同一输出文件中,按照著者名或年代顺序打印输出。⑥私人数据库服务。为用户提供设计知识，建立专用联机数据库。提供计算机软件。还计划增加电子邮政和家庭购物服务等。
