交流电位差计按照补偿方法测量交流电压的电位差计，又称交流补偿器。原理 两个正弦交流电动势在极性对接时要达到补偿或平衡,必须具备3个条件：①两者频率相同；②幅值相等；③相位相同。因此，交流电位差计只能测量同频率的正弦电压，且必须具有幅值和相位两个调节回路。交流电位差计分直角坐标型(图1 ) 和极坐标型（图2）。图中毫安表mA监测并借以标定交流电位差计的工作电流(用调节电阻r调节);检测仪表用于指零,对于工频可采用振动检流计。图1中标准的无感可变电阻器 R上产生同相补偿电压，互感线圈M的二次电动势为正交补偿电压，它们的大小均可以调节。图2中单相电源经过电阻、电容元件分相，成为两相电源，再经过移相电路，使标准的无感可变电阻器R上产生的补偿电压相位连续可调。使用 交流电位差计具有与直流电位差计相同的优点，即不从被测回路取出电流，也无电流注入被测回路，所以当被测电压Ex是没有带负载能力的高阻源或弱信号源时,用交流电位差计测量其电压Ex最合适。此外,在比较两个电动势的大小、进行磁测量或者需要测量Ex的相位时，都可以用交流电位差计。交流电位差计由于工作电流不易准确标定，不易获得准确的正交补偿电压或难于实现准确的移相，工作时易受外界干扰，易受电源谐波和交流检测指零仪表特性的影响等，所以其准确度一般仅达0.1～0.5级，其发展也受到限制。
