少数民族指多民族国家内人口居于少数的民族，也有指外来移民的。在中国，有蒙古、回、藏、维吾尔、苗、彝、壮、布依、朝鲜、满、侗、瑶、白、土家、哈尼、哈萨克、傣、黎、傈僳、佤、畲、高山、拉祜、水、东乡、纳西、景颇、柯尔克孜、土、达斡尔、仫佬、羌、布朗、撒拉、毛南、仡佬、锡伯、阿昌、普米、塔吉克、怒、乌孜别克、俄罗斯、鄂温克、德昂、保安、裕固、京、塔塔尔、独龙、鄂伦春、赫哲、门巴、珞巴、基诺等55个少数民族，人口约9132万(1990年)，占全国总人口8%。分布呈大杂居、小聚居格局。多有本民族语言文字，部分通用汉语文。宗教和自然崇拜有广泛深刻的影响。社会发展较汉族缓慢，经济比较落后，且发展不平衡。多从事农牧、渔猎生产。解放后，通过民主改革，实行民族区域自治，实现了各民族之间的团结平等。各少数民族与汉族一起走上社会主义现代化建设的道路。
