方苞(1668～1749)清代散文家。字凤九,一字灵皋,号望溪。桐城（今属安徽）人。康熙三十八年（1699），江南乡试第一名。四十五年(1706)进士,以母病归家未出仕。五十年(1711)以戴名世《南山集》案被牵连入狱。赦出后隶汉军旗籍，入直南书房。六十一年(1722)，充武英殿修书总裁。雍正时，免去旗籍，仍归汉籍。累官翰林院侍讲学士、内阁学士兼礼部侍郎。乾隆时，再入南书房，任礼部右侍郎、经史馆总裁等职。七年(1742)辞官归。方苞是清代桐城派散文的创始人。他尊奉程朱理学和唐宋散文。他据《史记·十二诸侯年表序》所谓孔子"约其辞文，去其烦重，以制义法"，提倡写古文要重"义法"。他说：""义"即《易》之所谓"言有物"也；"法"即《易》之所谓"言有序"也。意以为经而法纬之，然后为成体之文。"（《又书货殖传后》）提出文章要重"清真雅正"和"雅洁"，他说古文中"不可入语录中语，魏晋六朝人藻丽俳语，汉赋中板重字法，诗歌中隽语,《南、北史》佻巧语"(沈莲芳《书方望溪先生传后》),他认为归有光的散文,"其辞号雅洁,仍有近俚而伤于繁者"(《书归震川文集后》)。又说："凡无益于世教、人心、政法者，文虽工弗列也。"（《送李雨苍序》）在《再与刘拙修书》中，反对黄宗羲、颜元的反程朱理学的思想，持论严而拘，但能适合清朝巩固思想统治及文风的需要，所以其说得以流行，影响颇大。方苞自己写的散文，以所标“义法”及"清真雅正"为旨归。读经、子、史诸札记,以及《汉文帝论》、《李穆堂文集序》、《书卢象晋传后》、《左忠毅公逸事》、《与李刚主书》、《孙征君传》、《万季野墓表》、《游潭柘记》等，都写得简练雅洁有断制，没有支蔓芜杂的毛病，开创清代古文的新面貌。但感情比较淡泊，形象性不强,气魄不够宏大。袁枚讥笑他"才力薄"(《仿元遗山论诗》),姚鼐也说他:"阅太史公书(《史记》),似精神不能包括其大处、远处、疏淡处及华丽非常处。"（《与陈石士书》）方苞有些作品如《狱中杂记》，反映了封建司法制度和监狱管理的残酷与黑暗；《送冯文子序》、《送吴平一舅氏之钜鹿序》、《请定征收地丁银两之期劄子》、《请备荒政兼修地治劄子》，反映了一些州县吏治黑幕及民生疾苦，较有现实意义。著有《望溪先生文集》18卷,《集外文》10卷,《集外文补遗》2卷。
