鄂中鄂西起义中国共产党鄂中特别委员会和鄂西特别委员会，根据中共中央委员会"八七会议"精神和中共湖北省委员会秋收起义计划，分别在农民运动基础较好的鄂中、鄂西地区,组织和武装农民，准备起义。1927年9月10日夜，中共鄂中特委领导约30人的农民武装在沔阳戴家场举行起义，随即组成游击队，在沔阳、监利、潜江县边境开展游击活动，一度占领沔阳县城（今沔城），游击队发展到200余人。9月中旬，中共鄂西特委领导公安县农民约 300人举行起义，组成游击队，并占领公安县城（今南平）3个多月。沔阳、公安起义后,监利、石首、江陵、荆门、当阳、天门、汉川等地，也相继举行了农民起义，建立了游击队，在当地开展游击活动。1928年1月,中共湘西北特委领导人周逸群、贺龙等奉中共中央指示由上海去湘西北组织工农武装，路过洪湖地区时，将分散活动的几支游击队共 500余人组成第49路工农革命军，在长江两岸的监利、石首、华容地区展开进攻作战，消灭了多股国民党团防和土匪，初步打开了洪湖地区的局面。不久,周、贺去湘西北,游击队在当地继续坚持斗争。鄂中鄂西起义,为尔后建立红军第6军和洪湖革命根据地创造了条件。
