成就动机一种以高标准要求自己力求取得活动成功为目标的动机。具有这种动机因素的学生，就能刻苦努力，战胜学习中的种种困难和障碍，取得优良成绩。成就动机的基本特点：①人的活动总是指向一定的目标，总是力图在某些方面取得成就的。②在克服障碍和困难的过程中，成就动机使人正视所遇到的挫折和失败,表现出极大的韧性和毅力,不达目的决不罢休。③成就动机具有复杂的多级性，从幼儿到儿童、青少年、成人及至老年，出现许多不同情况。儿童幼小时，言语学习、生活自理、游戏等是主要活动，他们的成就动机就表现在努力做好这些事情上；入学后的儿童其主要活动是学习，取得优良学习成绩是他们成就动机的主要目标；到了青少年时期，成就动机逐渐复杂化，除了仍追求好的学习成绩外，也追求文娱、体育、团体活动上的成功；至于成年人和老年人，他们追求的主要是在劳动、工作、学术等方面有所成就。④人的成就动机是整个动机体系中的一种动机,它与求知、自我提高、创造以及赞誉、遵从、归属等动机交织在一起，相互渗透，相互作用。培养学生正确的成就动机是教师、家长的责任。在这个工作中要注意以下几点：①激发并帮助学生建立适当的成就动机，也就是使他们明确知识学习、体育锻炼、品德修养等方面所追求的目标。这些目标应该是他们经过努力可以达到的，而不是高不可攀的；是明确具体的，而不是模糊抽象的。②学生在活动中遇到困难，一时达不到既定目标时，要帮助他们分析已有的进步，即肯定并让学生明确他们已经取得的成就。这样他们就能增强达到目标的信心和勇气。③当学生在某种活动中获得成功，他们往往感到满足。这种满足可以起自我强化的作用，使他们追求更高的成就，但由于他们水平所限，不一定能树立恰当的目标；同时，这种满足也可能使他们停止不前。所以，教师在赞扬他们已有成就的同时，要帮助他们树立进一步追求的目标，乃至终生的奋斗──建设社会主义现代化的祖国，为人类谋福利。
