棉织物以棉纱线为原料的机织物，统称棉布。棉织物用途广泛，除用作服装外，还可供装饰用和工业用。棉织物的组织结构因经纬交织方法不同，分为平纹、斜纹和缎纹三种基本组织（见织物组织），以及将它们加以变化或联合而成的变化组织、联合组织、提花组织和复杂组织。平纹织物有平布、府绸、帆布等。斜纹织物有斜纹布、哔叽、华达呢、卡其等。缎纹织物分经面缎纹和纬面缎纹两类，有直贡呢、横贡缎等。提花织物有提花布、装饰布等。采用复杂组织可织成毛巾布、灯芯绒、平绒和双层织物等。棉织物分白织坯布和色织布。各种组织的白织坯布，又称本色布或原色布，多数需经染整加工制成漂布、色布、印花布，有的还需经丝光、防缩、防皱整理。色织布是采用先经漂染的纱线织成，多数需经过整理加工使成品外表美观并有良好的服用性能。经过起绒加工，使棉织物表面（单面或双面）呈现出绒毛而成绒布。粗厚的棉织物大多采用29号以上（20英支以下）棉纱织制，细薄的用15号以下(40英支以上)棉纱织制。棉织物的幅宽在20世纪50年代以前多数为76～92厘米，后来逐渐向阔幅发展，以适应服装裁剪工业化生产的需要。随着化学纤维的发展，棉与多种化学纤维的混纺也有了发展。与棉混纺的化学纤维，其长度和细度不能与棉纤维差异过大,这类化学纤维称为棉型化纤,纯纺或混纺的织物称为棉型织物。各类棉织物品种几乎都有相应的棉型织物。如棉和涤纶的混纺织物称为棉的确良，具有坚牢、挺刮、快干、免烫的优点，但吸湿、透气等服用性能不及纯棉织物。
