城市垃圾辐射处理用γ射线和电子束照射城市固体废物，以达到杀菌、消毒作用的一种无害化处理方法。污水处理厂排出的污泥等废弃物内含有大量病菌、病毒、寄生虫卵等病原体，活力很强，采用普通加温或投加石灰等杀菌方法难于完全杀灭。这些固体废物作为肥料施于农田，有些病菌能?谕寥乐猩媸轮茫斐赏寥篮退次廴荆踩死嗪蜕蟮慕】怠?20世纪70年代初，农业领域在应用放射性技术的基础上形成"废物辐射处理"新技术。目前欧洲农业核技术学会(ESNA)已成立"废品辐射处理组"。1977年在瑞典召开了第二次国际"废物辐射"会议。废物辐射处理方法比之化学、生物以及发酵处理法有许多优点，它的设备简单，操作方便，用泵或其他传送工具把废物送进辐射处理设备，经放射线照射后即可达到杀菌目的，而且放射线穿透力强，杀菌较彻底。污泥经过照射，颗粒还会由小变大，从而使污泥具有良好的脱水和沉淀性能。美国和德意志联邦共和国建有这种处理厂。美国设在波士顿鹿岛的污泥辐射处理厂，日处理量为375米3。其设备如图所示。污泥传送鼓材质为不锈钢,长度132厘米，直径45厘米。采用的最小辐射剂量为40万拉德(rad)，电子束能量为850千电子伏。德意志联邦共和国设在万德尔的污泥辐射处理厂，每小时处理量为6米3，厂房占地面积400米2，高9米,采用的最小辐射剂量亦为40万拉德。实践经验证明，污泥的辐射处理设备的电子束的能量越高，通过电子束辐射区的污泥层厚度也可以越大。一般，污泥层厚度为1.5～5毫米时，电子束的能量相应为750千电子伏至 1.5兆电子伏；污泥层的宽度以1.2米，流速以2米/秒为宜。辐射法处理污泥的费用并不高。德意志联邦共和国一个厂房面积为150米2的处理厂,可处理20万至100万人口的城市污水处理厂排出的污泥，其处理费用为每吨污泥2.70西德马克。美国干污泥辐射处理费用如下表（美元/吨污泥）：由于废物中所含病原体的种类和数量不同，故有效的辐射剂量也不一样，一般安全剂量在 100万拉德以下。常用的辐射源有60钴、137铯、90锶、85氪等。利用废放射性同位素是经济可行的方法。进行辐射处理时，只要把辐射源密封好，如放置在壁厚为1.5米的混凝土或其他贮器内,以及辐射剂量不超过上述安全值，就不会产生放射性污染，不存在消除放射性吸收量的后处理问题。
