和谐原理关于社会认知的一种均衡理论。由美国社会心理学家C.E.奥斯古德等人于1955年在海德平衡模式（见F.海德）基础上发展而来。它的突出特点是运用奥斯古德独创的意义微分法（见语义分化法）对认知变化进行客观的定量分析，找出认知的变化方向和变化量。和谐原理由认知者 (A)、认知对方 (B)、认知对象(C) 三个认知要素构成。认知变化有评价、能力和活动三个维度，分别表示认知评价、认知变化的潜能和认知的实际变化。奥斯古德采用极值作为评价常模：最有价值（即使认知最大限度趋于一致的那个值）、认知变化的方向和大小取决于评价值的矢量。在A和B是肯定关系的情况下（图1），如果A和B对C的评价都是+3，或是-3，则认知平衡；如果A的评价是+2,B的评价是-1,则不平衡。从评价尺度值上看，A和B的评价值相差3个单位。由于A的评价值接近于极端值，不易改变认知和态度。因此,A和B之间的认知平衡需要B向A上升2个单位,A向B下降1个单位。在A和B是否定关系情况下（图2），如果A的评价是+3，B的评价是-3,或者A是-3，B是+3，则认知平衡；如果A的评价是+2，B的评价是+1,则不平衡；A是+3，B是-1，也不平衡。从A和B的否定关系看,只要A和B的评价值是在不同极值的反向位置上,都是不平衡的。这一点和海德理论中只要有2个正关系和1个负关系均平衡的结论是不同的,即在海德模式中是平衡的，在奥斯古德微分法中未必是平衡的。
