截面描述两个微观粒子（或粒子系统）碰撞几率的一种物理量。一种运动中的粒子（或粒子系统）碰撞另一种静止粒子（或粒子系统）时，如果在单位时间内通过垂直于运动方向单位面积上的运动粒子数为一，静止粒子数也为一,则单位时间发生碰撞的几率称为碰撞截面,简称截面。截面的量纲和面积相同。截面的几何意义是：当两个微观粒子（或粒子系统）碰撞时，如果把其中一个看作是点粒子，把碰撞时的相互作用等效成某种极短程的接触作用时，碰撞几率应正比于沿运动方向来看另一粒子（或粒子系统）等效的几何截面，这个几何截面就是碰撞截面。碰撞截面是入射能量的函数。当需要考察对末态的运动参量加某种限制时的截面变化率，这就导致微分截面的概念。例如在弹性散射中，在空间某特定方向单位立体角的散射截面就是一种描写角分布的微分截面。当需要考察对末态进行不连续变化的分类截面时，就导致部分截面的概念。例如在研究散射问题时，当把散射过程按碰撞角动量来分解，则截面就可表示成各种角动量对截面贡献之和，这种给定角动量的截面就是一种部分截面。又例如在碰撞产生反应中，可以按各种可能的末态对截面的贡献之和来给出截面值，这种给定末态粒子的截面也是一种部分截面。微分截面对相应的运动参量的积分以及部分截面按分类标准对所有可能的情形求和，都得截面，这时为明确区别常又称截面为总截面。在碰撞产生反应时只对末态中某个特定的粒子进行测量得到的截面称为单举截面；如果只对末态中某两个特定的粒子进行测量得到的截面称为双举截面；如果对末态中所有粒子都进行测量得到的截面称为遍举截面。如果在碰撞时，粒子的类型、内部运动状态和数目都未改变,称为弹性散射,相应的截面称为弹性截面。粒子的类型、内部运动状态或数目有改变的碰撞过程统称反应过程，相应的截面称为反应截面或非弹性截面。截面的单位为靶恩,1靶恩＝10-24厘米2,高能物理中强相互作用散射和反应过程截面的数量级为数十毫靶恩。
