比较图书馆学图书馆学分支学科。从社会政治、经济、文化、思想和历史的角度，对不同国家或不同文化背景下的图书馆、图书馆体制、图书馆事业发展中的经验和问题等进行比较研究的学科。简史 1627年G.诺德所著《关于图书馆建设的意见》已包含了图书馆比较研究的内容。20世纪上半叶国际图书馆协会和机构联合会成立后，特别是第二次世界大战以后，图书馆界的国际交流和合作不断扩大，图书馆学领域跨国度、跨文化的比较研究逐步开展起来。50年代以后比较图书馆学逐步发展成为图书馆学的一门分支学科。C.戴恩、K.M.怀特、D.J.福斯克特等先后进行了探索。70年代以后，比较图书馆学有了长足的发展，L.肖尔斯、M.M.杰克逊、D.G.科林斯、J.B.丹顿等人的有关比较图书馆学的重要论著相继出版。美国和欧洲国家在图书馆学院校广泛开设比较图书馆学课程；世界上从事比较图书馆学研究的组织机构已有几十所。中国代曾出版程伯群著《比较图书馆学》(1924)，后来研究中断，直到80年代才重新引起中国图书馆学界的重视。功用 ①探索各国、各地区图书馆事业的发展规律，了解不同国家、不同社会环境中的图书馆实践，洞悉它们之间的共同点和差异点，并作出科学的解释，从而得出发展图书馆事业的普遍准则，为本国或其他国家制定图书馆事业发展规划作参考。②增进国际间的相互了解，促进并协助国际图书馆之间的交流与合作。如为制定国际性的图书馆协作计划，文献信息交流计划和图书馆工作国际标准等提供依据。③对不同国家的图书馆学理论和实践进行比较研究，从超越国界、民族、文化、社会环境的高度，扩展和深化对图书馆、图书馆事业发展中各种问题的认识，达到拓宽图书馆学研究领域和促进图书馆学发展的目的。④把握特定国家图书馆事业的整体性，将图书馆实际状况、图书馆学理论研究、图书馆学教育水平，与其相应各国的社会、文化、经济等条件对照起来加以考察，经过多角度、多层次的分析研究，预测本国和世界图书馆事业的发展趋势，以推动本国图书馆事业的发展。研究内容与方法 ①地域研究。联系各种背景因素对某一特定国家或地区的图书馆事业发展情况进行描述性的综述和评论性的分析。②跨国或跨文化研究。对两个或两个以上国家某种类型的图书馆，或图书馆管理体制、功能、图书工作某一方面的问题等进行对比。③实例研究。对某种类型的图书馆或图书馆事业发展中的某种关键性因素进行深入细致的分析研究，如对某一特定国家的图书馆学教育、图书馆网等的研究。
