气化气化人体内各种精微物质的化生及其转化。具体地说，是精、气、血、津液等物质的化生和转化以及精微物质转化为功能与废物的过程。由于这些变化都是在气的运动下产生的，所以称为气化。气化作用主要表现在两个方面。一方面促使饮食物转化成水谷精微，然后再化生成精、气、血、津液等精微物质，而且这些物质之间也可以相互转化，如津液转化为血，精血互化等。另一方面指脏腑的某些功能活动，以及代谢产物的产生与排泄。如三焦气化促进水液的输布，尿液的产生与排泄是肾和膀胱气化作用的结果。津液转化为汗液，饮食物消化吸收后的残渣转化为粪便。气化贯穿于生命的始终，它以五脏为中心，六腑为辅助，担负着人体内物质代谢及物质与功能间转化的全过程。如果气化作用失常，则影响整个物质代谢过程，造成各种病变。如三焦气化不利，水液代谢障碍，或出现水湿泛滥为水肿，或出现水湿停聚为痰饮。肾与膀胱气化不利，尿液开阖失度，或开而不阖，出现尿频、尿失禁、遗尿；或闭而不开，出现小便不利；尿有余沥，甚至癃闭。
