邮政通信网以分布在一国各地的邮政局(或合设的邮电局)及其所属的分支机构──邮政支局、邮政所等作为点,以各类邮件运输设备沿交通路线运行所形成的邮路作为线,按照一定组合方式联结成的一种网状结构体。用以实现用户委托传递的各种邮寄信息。按照传递信息时所起的作用和传递范围的不同,邮政通信网划分为:长途邮政网、市内邮政网与农村邮政网三个部分。长途邮政网的主要作用是完成两地邮件的长距离转移。市内邮政网和农村邮政网,都是整个邮政通信网的末端网络,主要的作用是负责接受、处理和投送各种邮件,并通过县、市邮政局(邮电局)与长途邮政网相联结。长途邮政网 联结全国各地邮政局(或邮电局)之间的那部分网络,一般是按照辐射转口制方式建立的。辐射转口制方式的要求是:凡两地之间有交通路线通达,同时又拥有一定业务流量的,就尽量开办直达邮路,使邮件一次辐射到底,以加快信息传递速度;对交通条件不允许,或虽具备交通条件,但业务流量很少的两点之间,则一般不开办直达邮路,其相互间需交换的邮件,要经与之有邮路相通的有关局转递。担负邮件转递业务的局,在邮政通信网上叫业务转口局。在中国,长途邮政网上设置了四级业务转口局:①省际转口局。设在几个省的交通中心或全国重要的政治经济中心城市。②省转口局。设在各省省会、自治区首府所在地。③县际转口局。设在专区或自治州首府所在地。④县转口局。设在县或自治县政府所在地。这四级局,分别负责处理转递流经它们的各省之间、省内及县间的转口业务。市内邮政网 以市邮局为中心,利用市内邮路以辐射形式连成的网。包括:①与所属各分支机构,分支机构与各投递段;②与报社、车站、码头、机场等。农村邮政网 连接县、乡(镇)、自然村而形成的网。它以县邮电局为中心,运用邮路与设在农村的邮电支局、邮电所,以及委办的邮政代办所、代办处等,以辐射形式联结而成。
