CAM系统的典型体系结构常见CAM系统的体系结构基本上有下列三种模式： 1) CAM子系统与CAD和CAE等子系统在系统底层一级集成式开发：CAD子系统提供强大的复杂产品造型与设计功能，生成的产品数字化定义模型为CAM子系统提供完备的数据服务。CAM子系统直接在产品数字化模型上进行NC轨迹计算，利用强大的后置处理模块生成NC指令。这种系统很多，像UGS公司的Unigraphics，PTC公司的Pro/Engineer，IBM公司的CATIA等，其基本特点是功能完备，系统庞大，模块组合发售，价格昂贵。 2) 以现有侧重产品造型的系统为平台的插件式CAM系统：此类CAM软件大多基于Windows环境，利用Windows体系提供的各种软件技术，以第三方的形式为产品造型系统提供插件模块或子系统(plug-in)。如Autodesk MDT内嵌HyperMILL和EdgeCAM；SolidWorks内嵌CAMWorks；负责SDRC系统CAM模块开发的伙伴公司CAMAX提供了Camand Modeler（支持3D曲面造型）并配以SmartCAM（支持多曲面加工）。此类插件系统在文件一级操作插件平台系统的CAD产品模型，利用特征识别(Feature Recognition)技术，直接在产品模型上获取一定复杂程度的切削区域几何表示及其加工工艺规范（当然，也支持用户的交互指点操作），进而生成NC加工刀位轨迹。此类CAM系统的大多捆绑平台软件，规模紧凑，集成度高，价格便宜。 3) 支持简单曲面造型的专用NC计算系统：如CAMAX的Camand和SmartCAM，NREC的5坐标叶轮加工系统MAX-AB（着重点位加工）和MAX-5（着重端铣和侧铣加工），CNC的MasterCAM，以及Cimatron等。这类系统提供主要面向复杂曲面形体的曲面（或曲面实体）造型和编辑，和更为强大的NC刀位轨迹计算、编辑、验证和后置处理功能。专用NC系统对数控机床的适应能力较强，提供更多的加工工艺定制方法。适用于中小企业或专用设备制造企业。 对于上述三类CAM系统而言，第一类系统基本都建立在实体模型表示上，采用交互式指点、定制形成切削方案和工艺规划；第二类则在第一类系统的基础上增添了加工特征自动识别技术；第三类系统依靠较为完备的曲面建模，仍采用交互方式在面模型上快速生成多种加工形式的刀位轨迹，但相对薄弱的造型功能制约了CAM系统的应用.
