船舶检验对船舶实行的技术监督检验，以保障船舶具备安全航行的条件。按国际惯例分为法定检验、船舶入级检验和公证检验三种。法定检验 船旗国（见船舶登记）政府法令所规定的监督检验。由船旗国主管机关官员或主管机关认可的组织或验船师执行。各国进行船舶法定检验除执行本国有关法规外，还要执行国际上的规定。检验的内容主要有：根据国际船舶载重线公约（见《1966年国际船舶载重线公约》）规定对载重线的检验；根据国际海上人命安全公约规定对船舶安全构造、安全设备、无线电报或无线电话设备和散装谷物稳性的检验；根据《1972年国际海上避碰规则公约》规定对船舶号灯、号型、声响和灯光信号的检验；根据《1973年国际防止船舶造成污染公约》规定对防污染结构与设备的检验；根据《船舶装卸作业中防止工人工伤事故的公约》规定对船舶起货设备的检验；根据《1969年国际船舶吨位丈量公约》对船舶执行吨位丈量。关于执行法定检验的制度和检验种类，包括新造和营运中船舶的检验，中华人民共和国船舶检验局订有详细规程。对沿海及内河船舶根据具体情况作出规定。对国际航行船舶则须按照中国参加的国际公约来执行。国际海上人命安全公约和国际船舶载重线公约规定的检验有四种：①初次检验。适用于船舶投入营运前的检验。②定期检验。载重线定期检验期限最长不超过5年;客船安全证书定期检验期限最长不超过1年;货船安全构造检验不超过5年;货船安全设备检验不超过24个月；货船无线电报或无线电话设备检验不超过12个月。③年度检验。国际船舶载重线、货船安全构造和货船安全设备均要进行年度检验。④期间检验。超过船龄的油船的安全构造在定期检验后的第2年到第3年期间应作期间检验。船舶入级检验 为了使船舶获得船级和保持其船级(见船级社)，由船东申请并由验船机构进行的检验。在中国，所有国际航行的船舶均须由船舶检验局按照船舶入级规则进行入级检验。检验种类有：①建造中入级检验：对须获得船级的新建船舶进行的检验；②初次入级检验：对须获得船级的现有船舶进行的检验；③特别检验：对已获得船级的船舶为保持船级进行的检验，4～5年一次；④循环检验：可代替特别检验，把特别检验所需的检验项目分摊在4～5年中作周期的检验；⑤年度检验：保持船级的检验，每年一次；⑥锅炉检验：保持船级的检验,每年一次；⑦坞内检验：保持船级的检验,客船每年一次,货船2年一次;⑧螺旋桨轴和尾管轴检验:保持船级的检验,一般3年一次，但根据结构形式和润滑方式特点，可延长到5年一次；⑨临时检验:发生海损或机损后的检验，以确定是否能继续保持船级和确定修理范围。公证检验 在航运业务上，由船东、承租方、保险人或其他有关方面提出申请,由验船机构进行的检验,因此证明船舶所存在的实际情况，或证明船舶发生的意外情况及其原因。这种检验为起租（退租）、索取赔偿提供参考。
