大气污染固定监测站设在固定位置上对大气质量进行连续自动采样和测定，并对测定的数据进行存贮和传输的设施。它是一个装有采样装置、污染物连续监测仪器、气象参数测定仪器、数据传输及其他辅助装置的实验室。监测站可以是一座建筑物中的一个房间,或者是一座独立的建筑物,也可以是一个可移动的集装箱型或其他轻型的预制房屋。(见彩图)发展简史 20世纪60年代中期一些国家建立的监测站，所用的连续监测仪器大多采用湿化学方法，一般是有人操作的。70年代初建立的一些监测站，由于连续监测仪器长期运行的可靠性大大提高，以及较普遍地采用干法，一般可以做到无人操作，自动运行，只需定期维护。70年代后期建立的一些监测站，装有专用的微处理机，对连续监测仪器的运行进行控制并化简、存贮、传输数据，使监测站具有智能型功能。选址 大气污染固定监测站的位置，必须慎重选择。为使采集的大气样品有足够的代表性，通常不应靠近污染源和主要交通干线。监测站水平方向上的障碍物一般不得高于监测站与障碍物水平距离的二分之一，同时应注意地形，以免受局部地区小气候的影响。监测站的面积约为8～20平方米,站体结构应保证室内有适当的温度、湿度等。设备 监测站内装有大气采样管线，采样头高度一般为3～6米。环境空气经采样管线抽入站内，然后由采样管支线分配至各台监测仪器。管线设计得越短越好，管内压力接近于常压，流量要相当于各台监测仪器从管内抽取样品总量的3～5倍。管子材质的选择要考虑样品在管内通过时损失最小并且便于清洗。采样头的设计应能防尘、防水、防虫。颗粒物监测仪应设有单独的采样管。仪器和方法 通常站内设有二氧化硫、一氧化碳、氮氧化物、臭氧、总烃(甲烷在外)及颗粒物等污染物的连续监测仪器和风向、风速、温度、湿度等气象参数测定仪器。有些站仅设有其中几种仪器，有些站还有监测其他污染物的仪器。各类仪器的选型和分析方法，应符合国家的规定。对不同的污染物可采取不同的监测方法，如二氧化硫连续监测有紫外脉冲荧光法、气相色谱-火焰光度法、库仑分析法和电导法。一氧化碳连续监测有非分散红外吸收法。氮氧化物连续监测有化学发光法、比色法。臭氧连续监测有化学发光法和紫外吸收光度法。总烃（甲烷在外）连续监测有气相色谱－氢火焰离子化法。颗粒物监测有大容量采样器法、β射线吸收法。风向测定有风旗-滑线电位计法。风速测定有风杯-光电转换器法。温度测定有热敏电阻法。湿度测定有氯化锂传感器法等。在使用监测数据时，应了解各种不同测定方法之间数据的可比性。此外，为了保证安全运行，监测站内还装有可燃气检漏仪和自动灭火或自动断电装置。数据传输 监测仪器连续测得的污染物浓度模拟信号，经转换器换成数字信号，然后通过电话或无线电发射机定时（如每 5分钟一次）遥传至监测中心。同时在监测站内装有长图记录仪、纸带穿孔机或磁带盒等将实时数据存贮起来，作为原始记录，也可为没有数据通信系统的监测网提供脱机处理形式的数据。在装有专用微处理机的监测站，监测仪器连续测得并经转化的数字信号，首先送入微处理机，经过检误、化简、存贮，然后定时（如每小时一次）传至监测中心。仪器校正 为了保证测量精度，监测站内的污染物连续监测仪器每日必须用零气和标准气进行零点及跨度校正。仪器的校正方式可在仪器预先设定的周期内定时自动进行，也可接受监测中心的遥控指令随时进行。此外，每隔一段时间还必须进行人工多点线性校正。监测站正常运行时每年可提供6000小时以上的连续监测数据，对于判断污染源以及污染趋势是很有价值的。70年代中期，中国开始研制大气污染连续自动监测仪器的工作。一些重点城市正在建立研究大气污染固定监测站。
