电压保护利用电压的过低或过高所构成的继电保护，分别称为低电压保护和过电压保护。电力系统运行电压是电能质量的重要指标,当它偏离额定电压超过一定限度时,可能破坏系统的稳定运行,影响工厂产品的数量和质量,还可能造成用电设备的损坏。水轮发电机组或大型汽轮发电机在突然甩负荷而转速上升时，或者由于励磁调节系统失灵和运行人员失误，将产生危及绝缘安全的过电压，必须装设过电压保护。电动机长时间在低电压条件下运转，将因电流过大而烧坏，为此电动机常装设低电压保护。小接地电流系统发生接地故障时必然出现零序电压，利用此特征构成零序过电压接地保护。利用不对称短路或不对称运行时出现的负序电压特征构成的负序过压继电器，与单相低压继电器、三相过流继电器配合，组成灵敏度较高的复合电压起动的过电流保护装置。发电机低励和失磁故障特征之一是三相电压同时降低，为此有三相低压保护继电器。为了提高母线差动保护的可靠性，常用低压继电器作为辅助元件。为了提高电流速断保护的灵敏度，由过流继电器和低压继电器共同组成电流电压联锁速断保护。
