城市集中供热热源城市集中供热系统的热能制备和供应中心。在这里，将其他形式的能源（矿物燃料、核能、工业余热等）转换为热能，或直接采用地热等天然热源，通过蒸汽或热水等介质，沿着热网输送到用户。城市集中供热热源有以下几种形式：热电厂和区域锅炉房 都属将煤、重油、天然气等矿物燃料的化学能转换为热能的热源形式，是世界各国城市供热的两大主要热源形式。采用高参数、大容量供热机组，改造城市低效凝汽式发电厂为热电厂，作为城市集中供热热源；用区域锅炉房逐步替代分散的小锅炉房；合理确定热电厂和区域锅炉房的布局和联合供热方案，这些是发展城市集中供热的重要技术措施（见热电厂供热、区域锅炉房供热）。工业余热 指各种生产工艺过程的热损失。例如各种工业炉或其他工艺设备排出的高温烟气、冷却水、蒸汽、乏气或熔渣物理热等。工业余热的特点是与生产工艺密切相关，数量和参数波动很大。有些工业余热有可能通过热能转换或直接利用，回收部分热能作为城市集中供热的热源。有些高温余热还可用来发电。因此，首先要通过技术经济分析，确定余热利用方案。以工业余热作为城市集中供热热源时，往往要与其他热源联合运行，以提高供热可靠性和调节性能（见工业余热供热）。地热水 蕴藏于地层下的热水，具有储藏量、成分和参数因地而异，水温常年比较固定，水质常带有腐蚀性等特点,因此将它作为城市集中供热热源时,要做好勘探和水质分析，并注意防止管道和设备结垢和腐蚀。地热水供热不污染大气，节约能源，是一种有发展前途的热源形式（见地热水供热）。核能 核裂变产生的能量，可用来发电和供热。20世纪80年代世界上已有10余座核热电站实行抽汽供热，核供热堆正处于兴建阶段。核能供热具有节约大量矿物燃料、减轻城市运输压力等优点。但据某些资料分析，认为只有建设大型核反应堆，才是经济合理的（见核能供热）。除上述热源形式外，如美国、加拿大、瑞士等在电力供应充足的地区也利用电能于城市供热。还有的利用太阳能供热，但目前只限于热水供应和单幢建筑物采暖。
