显示器件屏幕受控激励,呈现信息供视觉感受的器件。它凭借电能,激励发光物质或调制外加光,以实现视觉感受信息的功能。显示器件一般分为有源显示和无源显示两类。前者为发光器件,如电子束管(CRT)、半导体发光二极管(LED)、等离子体显示器件和电致发光显示器件(ELD)。后者为光调制器件,本身并不发光,而依靠环境光照或另外的光源,如液晶显示器件(LCD)、电致变色显示(ECD)和电泳图像显示(EPID)。但是这种分类方法,也有例外的情况,如电子束管中的黑迹管和光阀,本身并不发光,而需要另外的光源。在中、大容量的显示方面以电子束管为主;而在中小容量(20~500字符)的显示方面,等离子体显示、液晶显示、电致发光显示、发光二极管显示与电子束管并存。在特大容量(5000字符以上)显示方面尚无其他器件可以替代电子束管。
