语义学语义学semantics研究自然语言中词语意义的学科。也可以指对逻辑形式系统中符号解释的研究。发展趋势是两者汇流，相得益彰。语义学有以下5个分支。①哲学语义学。这是哲学家对自然语言的语义的研究，围绕着什么是意义这一难题展开。古希腊时代柏拉图提出，词语的意义就是其所指对象。这种观点称为指称论。有些哲学家如D.戴维森提出，语句的意义与命题的真假有关。这种观点称为真值论。L.维特根斯坦反对真值论，认为词的意义是它在语言中的用法。他的理论叫做用法论。到目前为止，关于什么是意义的争论，还在进行。②历史语义学。语文学家早就关注语义问题，尤其是词义演变问题。中国和西方学者都作过大量而细致的词源和训诂研究。③结构语义学。在结构主义理论影响下，一些语义学者由历时性的研究转向共时性的研究，由研究一个词的语义变化转向研究词与词的语义关系。④生成语法学派语义学。目标是描写和解释人们的语义知识，同时，也描写一切词组和一切句子的意义。⑤孟德斯鸠语义学。认为了解一个句子的语义就是了解该句子是否符合真值条件，是否真实反映世界上的情况。
