阿拉斯加天然气输送系统美国和加拿大两国的天然气生产公司和输送公司自筹资金，正在合作兴建的大型输气管道工程。主干管线起点位于美国阿拉斯加北坡的普鲁拉德霍湾气田，线路南下穿过阿拉斯加，再经加拿大育空地区和不列颠哥伦比亚省至艾伯塔省的加罗林。这条管道在加罗林分岔，一条向东到美国中西部和南部，终点在路易斯安那州芝加哥附近的德威特（东段）;一条向西到美国西海岸,终点在加利福尼亚州圣弗兰西斯科（旧金山）附近的安蒂奥克（西段）。此外，计划修建的另一条管线起点位于加拿大马更些三角洲气田，终点在怀特霍斯，与该管道系统的主干管线相接。这一管道系统把阿拉斯加普鲁拉德霍湾气田的天然气输送到北纬49度线以南的美国内陆市场，并把加拿大艾伯塔省多余的天然气输往美国。阿拉斯加天然气输送系统的工程在1968年开发普鲁拉德霍湾油田时提出。70年代美国和加拿大两国政府就这一工程组织了多次技术、 经济、 工程等论证，并于1977年达成协议，批准建设。1981年正式动工，预计在1986年冬季前全部建成。系统的主干管线长约7800公里，其中阿拉斯加部分长1198公里,管径1219毫米;加拿大部分长3271公里,管径为1420、1219、1066和914毫米；东段部分长1798公里,管径1066毫米;西段部分长1467公里，管径1066毫米。管材大部分是5LX-70，小部分为5LX-65。该系统拥有一座大型综合天然气处理厂，处理能力为每天5663万立方米，主要功能是脱除水、二氧化碳、硫化氢、机械杂质，并回收丙烷、丁烷等；50座干线压气站（输气量增大后将增加到59座），每站安装一台功率为26000～29000马力的燃气轮机驱动的离心压气机；10座丙烷冷冻天然气厂，每套装置功率为 10000马力。此外，还有多座计量站、线路切断阀室、阴极保护站。设有一个自动化调度中心，负责全线厂、站的遥控和调度。全线采用微波进行通信，以及自动化信息传送与控制。系统输气量为每天5663～9060万立方米。系统输气压力各段不同，压力高的为100千克力/厘米2，低的为64千克力/厘米2。阿拉斯加输气管道是西半球最长的一条大直径管道，也是迄今私营企业承担的最大的一项管道建设工程。管道工程十分艰巨。管道设计、施工的主要特点是：①把天然气降温后输送（天然气温度控制在-17℃）,以保证埋地管道不破坏途经的永冻土，并解决了冻胀问题。②输气压力高达88.2～100千克力/厘米2,是目前陆上输气管道中最高的。③采用了掺有稀土金属，经特殊工艺处理，具有较高的冲击韧性和良好的止裂性能的钢材。此外,为了防止管道大规模撕裂，在阿拉斯加北坡地带,管道每隔762～914米，安装一个止裂器。④采用了建一段用一段的建设方法，先从加拿大部分和美国东、西段开始建设，以便与美国原有管道系统连接，建成后立即投入生产，尽早把加拿大的艾伯塔省剩余天然气输往美国，以获取经济收益，加快管道建设资金的周转。
