土地利用分类根据不同的土地利用方式和特点所形成的地域差异性进行土地利用的分类。土地利用分类是土地利用研究的重要内容，又是土地利用制图的基本依据。分类原则 首先要反映土地利用的地域分异规律，根据各地区土地利用的特点，制定分类的指标加以划分，并据此反映优势利用的类型。其次，人们长期改造、利用土地而形成的土地利用现状的特点及其合理程度，也可以作为土地利用分类的依据。土地利用分类不单是为了识别利用的现状，更重要的是为了供生产上今后进一步的利用和需要作参考。因此，土地利用分类还要突出利用程度上的差别和加强利用的可能性。为了便于认识各类土地利用的从属关系，分类方法要考虑一定层次等级的系统性。首先可根据已利用与未利用分出第一层。在已利用土地中，又根据国民经济主要部门分出第二层，即农业用地、牧业用地、林业用地、工矿用地、交通用地、城镇建筑用地等。然后在每一部门用地中根据利用方式和利用方向分出第三层，如耕地可根据水利恬件、地形条件再分。其下还可根据耕作制度和作物组合等分出第四层。这种土地利用分类可用土地利用图表达。分类系统 为使土地利用分类充分满足客观要求，要联系人类改变土地的整个过程，把土地利用过程作为一个系统来研究，考虑它的输入和输出以及两者的相互关系、同外部的联系、对土地本身和环境的影响。根据波兰学者J.科斯特罗维茨基的意见，世界上土地利用系统可归并为三大类：①生物生产系统，包括农业、林业、牧业、渔业、采集、狩猎等系统。在农业系统下又可分多年生作物栽培、短期作物栽培、混合农业、家畜饲养等子系统。②技术生产系统，包括采矿、能源生产、加工工业等系统。③服务系统，包括联系生产与消费的运输业、商业、文化、旅游等系统。土地利用三大系统在用地数量和质量要求上都有差别，对环境和土地质量的影响也不同。土地利用系统可根据下列 3个主要指标，再进行详细分类：①土地利用的集约程度，以单位面积上投入的劳力和资金来计算；②土地所有权和企业规模，以占地面积、投入的劳力和资金数量以及企业的产量来计算；③利用的效率，包括劳力和资金生产率，商品性生产的专业化程度。这些指标还要用一套可以量度的变量来表示，并要逐步对它们进行标准化。
