阅览室图书馆的服务设施。图书馆为读者在馆内使用文献而提供的专门场所。早期的图书馆没有单独的阅览室,通常只在书架旁或书架中间摆放几张阅览桌。1857年英国不列颠博物院图书馆的圆形阅览室建成开放，它将阅览室同书库分开，成为当时世界上座位最多、设备最好的阅览室。1904年中国古越藏书楼规定在楼下中厅60个座位上阅书，事实上成了专门供读者看书的阅览室。近代图书馆的阅览室与书库大多有明显的界限，但随着图书馆由重收藏向重利用的转变以及开架制的实行，在书库内设阅览桌和增加阅览室内的藏书已较为普遍，阅览室的设备也趋向实用与舒适。图书馆的阅览室一般分为普通阅览室、专门阅览室和参考研究室3种类型。 普通阅览室有时也称综合阅览室，开放时间较长，使用手续简便，学校图书馆还有专为学生提供自修场所而设的普通阅览室，通常不配备书刊或只配备少量报刊和常用工具书。专门阅览室是为满足特定读者群的不同需求而设立的，便于读者集中使用某一范围的文献，也便于馆员对特定读者群和特定范围文献的研究，一般按知识门类、读者类型、文献类型和语种分别设置，如社会科学新书阅览室、教师阅览室、缩微品阅览室、外文期刊阅览室等。参考研究室是为专家、学者进行科研活动而专门设置的工作室，一般规模较小，图书馆将某一课题所需文献集中陈放在室内，供他们在课题研究期间专用。此外，一些群众团体和文化机构也专门为公众阅读现期报刊和通俗读物而设立阅览室。除专供学生自修用的阅览室外，各种阅览室都带有辅助藏书(见馆藏组织)。在采用开架制时，阅览桌椅与书架的布局随读者对象和管理方式的不同而采用多种形式：①集中式，即阅览桌椅集中设在书架的中间或一边，这样可容纳较多的读者，便于管理，多用于普通阅览室。②分散式，即阅览桌椅分散设置在书架之间，这样能给读者提供良好的阅览小环境，多用于专门阅览室。③书库式，即在书库内书架的四周摆放一些阅览桌椅，其特点是能容纳较多的辅助藏书，适用于读者短时查阅文献的文献检索室。
