婚姻改革中国破除封建的和半封建半殖民地社会的婚姻家庭制度及其残余，建立社会主义的婚姻家庭制度的一种社会风俗改造。在中国长期的文明发展历程中，一些野蛮的婚姻习俗已从历史上逐渐消失。但是，有些婚姻习俗如包办婚姻、买卖婚姻、一夫多妻等,因有其赖以存在的经济、政治制度而长期流行，成为阻碍社会进步的一个重要因素。20 世纪 代末30年代初，在中国共产党领导的革命根据地和解放区就开始进行婚姻改革，先后颁布了《中华苏维埃共和国婚姻条例》和《中华苏维埃共和国婚姻法》。根据这些条例和法律进行的婚姻改革工作，具有强烈的反帝、反封建的性质。中华人民共和国建立后，中央人民政府于1950年公布了《中华人民共和国婚姻法》，从此在全国范围内广泛开展婚姻改革，目的是要建立以婚姻自由、一夫一妻、男女平等、保护妇女和子女的合法权益为特征的社会主义婚姻家庭制度。1980年，中国修改并公布了新的婚姻法。婚姻改革的任务是继续同婚姻家庭领域里残存的旧习俗作斗争，巩固和发展社会主义婚姻家庭制度，中国共产党领导的婚姻改革，使半封建半殖民地社会遗留下来的包办婚姻、买卖婚姻、男尊女卑的婚姻家庭制度被废除，建立起以男女平等、互敬互爱、尊老爱幼、民主和睦为基础的婚姻家庭制度；改变了社会成员在婚姻习俗方面的旧的思想观念和社会道德风气。中国进行婚姻改革的一项重要措施是建立婚姻登记制度。中国政府曾于1955年、1980年和1985年先后制订和修订了《婚姻登记办法》。婚姻登记工作的基本职能是保障合法婚姻：进行结婚或离婚登记，必须符合婚姻法规定的条件；只有经过婚姻登记确立的婚姻关系才能得到法律的承认与保护；婚姻登记由基层人民政府办理。它有申请、审查、登记三项互相衔接的程序。其中，最关键的是做好审查工作，向当事人讲解婚姻法有关规定，对情况不明或有疑点的及时进行调查，如发现违反婚姻法行为,对违反者进行批评教育,并根据情况进行适当的调解或处理。经过30多年的实践，婚姻登记已成为婚姻改革和婚姻管理的重要环节，具有促进家庭的民主、和睦，调动社会成员的劳动积极性的功能；成为观察婚姻家庭的社会风气的窗口，对建设社会主义精神文明发挥了重要的作用。
