彩绘泥塑保护与修复中国古代彩塑多是外表绘彩的木胎泥塑。胎骨分空箱体和立柱 2种。也有在立柱外面绑扎芦苇、芨芨草等材料的。木胎易遭受菌类和虫、鼠的侵害。浸水或长期潮湿易使彩绘泥层产生裂隙或酥散。古代彩塑，有些已经过后代重修。明清时重修的古代彩塑表面已重新敷彩，改变了原貌。彩塑维修技术现代有了很大发展，修复方法一般有：①换新木胎。用经过防腐处理的新木胎更换腐朽的旧木胎。②修补泥层。用50％砂子、35％胶泥、13％水、2％聚醋酸乙烯乳液(均为重量比), 或用胶泥掺以棉花、麻刀、稻糠、麦秸等配制新塑泥。然后向泥塑破口处涂刷一层聚醋酸乙烯乳液，再填补新塑泥，可使新旧塑泥粘接牢固,防止旧塑泥吸收新塑泥中的水分后酥散脱落,并可避免新塑泥与旧塑泥直接接触后，新塑泥中的水分渗入干燥的旧塑上，造成彩绘表面污损。③补色做旧。新补泥层干透后，用矿物质颜料对新修补的部分补色做旧。④加固与粘接旧塑泥。酥松的旧塑泥层，用溶于乙醇的虫胶溶液从彩绘泥层背面浸渗、加固。大面积酥松即将脱落的泥层，待浸渗的虫胶乙醇溶液干燥后，再用涂有环氧树脂的玻璃纤维布或纱布加固泥层背面。脱落下来的小块旧塑泥层，也可用聚醋酸乙烯乳液粘接。
