流量测量仪表测量单位时间内流过管道某截面物质的体积或质量的仪表。测量体积流量的流量计用立方米/时或升/时为单位；测量质量流量的流量计用吨/时或千克/时为单位，统称为瞬时流量计。生产上还需要测定一段时间内流过管道物料的累计量，称为总流量。可以在流量计上附加积算装置，将瞬时流量对时间进行积分运算，获得一段时间内通过的物料总体积或总质量，用立方米或吨为单位。这种测量总流量的仪表称为计量表，是流量表的一种类型,人们仍习惯把它称为流量计,家用小水表和煤气表就属于这种类型的流量仪表。流量测量仪表种类较多，按照测量原理分类主要有差压式流量计、流体阻力式流量计、流体振动式流量计、测速式流量计（见涡轮流量计、电磁流量计、超声流量计、激光流量计）、容积流量计、质量流量计、相关流量计等。60年代以来，工业过程控制计算机在实现企业管理、生产过程最优控制，以及企业的经济、质量管理等方面逐步得到广泛应用。流量测量数据是生产过程中的重要数据。现代企业综合自动化对流量仪表在品种上，精度上和环境适应性上有越来越高的要求。例如,随着输油送水管径逐渐加大(有时管径达 3～5米)，用户为了避免计量误差带来的损失，甚至提出万分之五的测量精度。由于流量测量与明显的经济效果直接相关，近年来许多国家和企业不惜大量投资，建立流量标准和研究开发新型流量测量仪表。70年代以来出现的激光流量计和相关流量计是性能优越的新型流量测量仪表。流量测量仪表除采用新方法、新原理外，在改进已有的成熟的测量技术方面也有新的发展。如电磁流量计和超声流量计采用微处理机后，在性能和功用上已有很大提高。一种带微处理机的便携式超声流量计已能具有测量种类(流速、流量)选择、测量或打印时间设定、配管输入(被测管壁厚度、材料衬里等参数)、测量值累计、开渠流量测量等近20种功能。新的流量测量仪表的目标是满足各种流量测量要求（小至血管流量测量，大至水库、拦河坝流量测量），并逐步扩大到具有流量控制功能，成为流量测量控制系统。
