艾比湖是准噶尔盆地最大的湖泊，位于精河县城以北35公里处，西与北疆铁路精河到阿拉山口段相邻，向北行35公里，即到阿拉山口，东为甘家湖梭梭林自然保护区。艾比湖是内陆咸水湖，也是新疆第二大咸水湖。博尔塔拉河、精河、奎屯河，分别从西、南、东三个方向注入艾比湖，成为湖水的主要来源。湖面呈椭圆状，面积600平方公里，水深平均2米左右，湖面海拔189米。艾比，蒙古语意思为“向着太阳”。因为是咸水湖，人们又俗称其为盐湖。艾比湖是一个资源蕴藏丰富的湖泊。艾比湖区中，有丰富的盐、硭硝、硫酸镁、硼、溴、碘等非金属矿藏。钠盐储量有1．25亿吨，钾盐为200多万吨，硭硝9700万吨，硫酸镁1亿吨以上。这里是博尔塔拉蒙古自治州重要的食盐、硭硝产地。早在清光绪二十八年，即1902年，清政府就以“官督商办”的体制，在这里开办盐业；民国年间，这里的盐业也十分兴旺。新中国成立后，艾比湖的盐业发展突飞猛进。总晒场面积达到201．31公顷；能源、通讯、交通设施完备；提水、抽卤、积盐、运输，已实现了动力化、机械化。目前的年生产能力为：原盐5万吨，粉洗加碘精盐1．5万吨，产硭硝3万吨，氯化镁1000吨。盐业已成为精河县国民经济的支柱产业。艾比湖独特的湿地生态环境，是数百种动、植物生息繁衍的场所，有着其生物资源的多样性。在生物资源中，首屈一指的要属卤虫，被艾比湖周围的人称为“软黄金”。目前，这里已被列为新疆维吾尔自治区“湿地自然保护区”卤虫，是一种小型甲壳动物，生活在高盐度水域中。卤虫卵，是高档观赏鱼、名贵虾、蟹的良好活饵料。卤虫在我国是一种稀缺资源。然而，艾比湖的卤虫资源量在全国100多个盐湖中，名列榜首。虫体的年存量在4000吨左右；纯净干燥卵的年存量有200吨到400吨左右。目前，精河县与科研、生产单位联合开发卤虫产业。卤虫、卤虫卵系列产品开发项目被列入2000年度新疆维吾尔自治区“星火”计划。仅起步之初的2000年，就实现产值1400万元人民币。艾比湖的盐、艾比湖的卤虫所潜含的经济价值，经过专家们认真论证，大约在1万亿元以上。艾比湖沿岸茂密的芦苇，是纸业、建筑业宝贵的资源；次生林里的野生动物鹤、天鹅、野鸭、麝鼠等不仅是珍贵的物种资源，还为旅游开发提供了广阔的空间。湿地里诸多的生物资源，正等待着人们去进一步地认识与开发。
