污泥浓缩使污泥初步脱水的处理方法。目的是降低污泥的含水率，缩小污泥体积，为后续处理创造条件。污泥含水率高(99％左右),悬浮颗粒粒度很小(98％的颗粒小于1毫米)，固体颗粒外面还包一层厚的水合膜，影响污泥中颗粒的凝聚。为使污泥降低含水率，要采用浓缩、脱水（干化）、干燥等处理方法。其中以浓缩处理的费用最低，能源消耗最少，因此提高污泥浓缩效率，可以节省后续处理费用。污泥浓缩的方法主要有以下两种：沉降浓缩法 污泥在竖流式或辐流式浓缩池中靠沉降作用与水分离。浓缩池多为圆形。稀污泥从中间进水口输入池中，逐渐沉降或聚集。池底设有刮泥板，刮集污泥经排泥口由泵输送到消化池或干化场。沉降浓缩法可将难以浓缩的污泥中的固体物含量从0.5～2.5％浓缩到1.5～4.0％，体积约缩小2～5倍。从二次沉淀池排出的污泥浓缩所需时间一般为10～12小时。上浮浓缩法 主要有四种方法：溶气上浮、真空上浮、分散上浮和生物上浮。应用较多的是溶气上浮浓缩。溶气上浮是把压缩空气引入污泥中，使一部分空气在压力下溶于水，当污泥进入浓缩池后，压力消失，溶入水中的空气就成为微小气泡上升，携带污泥中悬浮颗粒浮上水面，由刮泥传送器除去。其过程如图。一般认为上浮浓缩法效果较好。经过处理的浮泥中的固体物含量可达7％,而处理时间为沉降浓缩法所需时间的1/3左右。此外，还可用离心机、震动筛对污泥进行浓缩。震动筛是借震动力破坏污泥的固体颗粒外围的水合膜，释放结合水。此法可以缩短浓缩时间，目前还在研究阶段。
