中国近代文艺报刊19世纪70年代至19以刊载文艺作品为主的报刊，累计近 100种，集中于上海、杭州、汉口、北京、香港等地出版， 上海出版的最多。报纸多为日报或 3 日报，刊物多为月刊或半月刊。最早的一批文艺报刊，是1872～1876年创刊的《瀛寰琐记》、 《四溟琐记》、《寰宇琐记》和 《侯鲭新录》。除后一种外，都是《申报》的增刊，编辑、撰稿人蔡尔康、何桂笙等也多是《申报》的编辑。以刊载古体诗词为主，也刊登时论、游记和少量翻译作品。1892～19，文艺报刊进一步发展。主要文艺报纸有《指南报》、 《消闲报》、 《游戏报》、《采风报》、《世界繁华报》、《海上文社日报》、《趣报》等。主要文艺刊物有《海上奇书》、《新小说》、《绣像小说》、《新新小说》、《月月小说》、《小说林》、《二十世纪大舞台》等。主要撰稿人如李伯元、高太痴、吴趼人、韩子云、孙玉声、黄摩西、陈去病等，都是当时著名作家或报刊主编。这些报刊大体分 3类：一类如《趣报》、《笑报》、《春江花月报》等，以消闲娱乐为主旨，所刊多为诙谐滑稽的市井嬉谈和"花丛风信"之类的妓院新闻, 内容糜烂，格调很低。文句文白相间，兼用方言。另一类如《新小说》、《小说林》、《采风报》等，在资产阶级改良主义思想的影响下，以"变国俗，开民智"为宗旨，提倡政治小说，刊载不少反映现实、支持变法维新和带有爱国主义色彩的作品。李伯元、吴趼人的《官场现形记》、《二十年目睹之怪现状》等讽刺小说， 就是在这类报刊上连载的。 这一类报刊中，以梁启超主编的《新小说》影响最大，它对晚清小说理论的探讨、小说创作的繁荣，都起了积极的作用。还有一类如《二十世纪大舞台》、《小说世界》、《南社》等, 由资产阶级革命派主办，带有明显的民主革命倾向，刊载了不少带有强烈民族主义和反清色彩的诗词、戏曲和演义小说。这些报刊还刊载文艺理论文章和翻译作品，G.G.拜伦、P.B.雪莱、C.狄更斯、V.雨果、G.de莫泊桑、J.W.Von 歌德、J.C.F.席勒、Л.H.托尔斯泰、马克吐温等欧美作家的作品，就是它们首先介绍给中国读者的。辛亥革命后，中国文艺报刊继续有所发展。除《小说月报》外，新创刊的还有《民权素》、《小说新报》、《礼拜六》、《金刚钻》等。这些报刊以刊载社会黑幕、娼门、哀情、武侠、神怪、侦探、宫闱小说为主。鸳鸯蝴蝶派小说就是在这些报刊上发展起来的。中国近代文艺报刊根植于半封建半殖民社会这块土壤，与近代中国的政治、 经济、 文化有着密切的联系，对近代某些文学流派的形成和诗歌、戏曲、小说创作的发展，都有一定的影响。参考书目阿英 (钱杏邨):《晚清文艺报刊述略》，古典文学出版社，北京，1958。
