杭州美术职业学校我校的前身为1964年创办的杭州市商业局所属杭州商业技术学校，1969年更名为“杭州五四中学”，1970年民办吴山中学并入五四中学，同年迁入现址，设初中部，1973年开设高中部1979年首次招收职高班。1982年更名为“杭州五四职业学校”，1993年更名为“杭州市五四职业高级中学”,1996年初中部分离，学校成为独立设置的全日制职业高级中学,1月更名为“杭州市美术职业学校”。在前校长舒士越同志（后曾任市教育局副局长、《杭州日报》社总编）的带领下，八十年代中后期我校迎来了发展史上的第一个高峰期。学校不断得到省、市领导及全国各地有关部门、兄弟单位的支持和鼓励。先后接待了日本、朝鲜、印度等亚洲地区的十二个国家以及美国、挪威、联邦德国等国家的外宾的参观考察。当时中央教育部副部长蒲建修、职教司司长孙振翰以及国家经委、教科所等领导先后来学校视察、指导工作。《人民日报》、《光明日报》、《中国教育报》、《浙江日报》、《杭州日报》、中央电视台、浙江电视台、杭州电视台等新闻媒体均多次报道了我校职业教育的发展情况和成就，中央电视台教育频道还专门通过通讯卫星播放了我校有效开展职业教育情况，在全国乃至国际上产生了较大的影响，赢得了较好的社会声誉。九十年代中期，由于受到“普高热”的影响，职业教育的发展也曾面临种种困难。但是学校领导能够顺应社会发展的要求，对专业建设进行了一些积极的改革。经过市场调查，及时增设了当时颇受欢迎的计算机应用专业，并在主打专业--美术专业进行了"综合·分流"的整体教学改革，同时加强学生管理，狠抓教学质量及师资队伍建设。几年的不懈努力，学校逐渐焕发出新的生机。由1992年的8个班逐渐发展到至今的21个教学班。经过二十多年的风风雨雨，今天的美术职校又进入了一个全新的发展时期。办学规模逐年扩大，相对稳定；专业设置特色明显，优势凸现；学生人格健康活泼，出口畅通；师资队伍整体健康，生机勃勃；硬件设施逐步改善，基本配套；社会声誉日益提高，良性循环。这所杭州市最早的职业中学又焕发出勃勃生机。学校现有美术专业三个：美术绘画专业、美术设计专业(下设:广告设计与制作、会展装潢设计与制作、动画设计与制作等专业）、工艺美术专业(装饰绘画)。现有班级21个，全日制学生数825名。在编教职工83名，其中教师数67人，本科学历65人，占教师总额97%；。高级教师占教师总额的 14.46 %；中级以上教师比例61.2%。双师型教师13名，占专业教师总额的50%。学校占地面积约10000平方米，校舍建筑面积6971平方米，现有美术专业画室13个，美术教师制作机房1个，教师画室7个，美术道具室1个，美术资料室1个；计算机专业学生操作机房4个，计算机教师工作机房1个；电子技术专业实验室2个；教师多媒体课件制作室1个，多媒体教室1个，师生电子阅览室1个。
