知识社会学研究知识或思想产生、发展与社会文化之间联系的一门社会学分支学科。又称思想社会学。1924年，德国社会学家M.舍勒在《知识社会学的尝试》一书中首先使用"知识社会学"的名称。这里的"知识"一词的含义包括思想、意识形态、法学观念、伦理观念、哲学、艺术、科学和技术等观念。知识社会学主要是研究思想、意识形态与社会群体、文化制度、历史情境、时代精神、民族文化心理等社会文化之间的联系，或者说是研究这些社会文化因素如何影响思想和意识形态的产生和发展。知识社会学的产生和发展，是社会学本身发展的结果，同时也是社会学转向研究意识形态的发展与社会文化的联系的结果。德国在第一次世界大战失败后，出现了社会文化、思想、意识形态的危机，一些社会学家转而研究人类历史的不同时期、不同种族和民族的思想、意识、精神的发展，研究各种思想、意识形态的发展与社会文化的联系。这种研究最初可见于社会学家M.韦伯论宗教与社会现象的关系、W.桑巴特论资本主义发展与社会现象的联系。舍勒在《社会学与世界观》（1923～1924）、《知识社会学的尝试》、《知识方式与社会》(1926)等著作中，论述了知识或思想与社会生活的关系。他把知识划分为解脱的、教养的、事业的 3种类型，认为知识或思想都是社会生活的产物，要研究它的产生和发展，就应分析它与社会群体之间的联系，说明何种社会群体产生何种思想、某种思想为什么得以发展。社会学家K.曼海姆是继舍勒之后对知识社会学的研究贡献最大的人物之一。他著有《意识形态与乌托邦──知识社会学导论》（1929）、《重建时代的人与社会》(1940)、《知识社会学论文集》(1952)等。他强调要研究思想史上各种变动着的观念、知识对于思想发展的影响和作用。他分析了19世纪末、20世纪初西方的官僚保守主义、历史保守主义、自由民主思想、社会主义、法西斯主义五种政治思潮，认为这些都是在不同社会群体生活实践中产生的思想或知识，是社会群体历史经验的集合。社会群体的生活形式不同，对世界的认识和解释也不同，但作为知识或思想都有共同的假定。曼海姆认为，知识社会学的任务就是对思想的形成、发展、变化及各种观念的相互依赖关系进行有控制的经验研究，找出意识形态与社会群体的联系，然后由经验研究上升到认识论高度，探讨思想意识反映社会存在的真实程度，确定思想意识与社会存在的关系及其结构，建立起检验知识或思想的正确标准。他所说的社会存在，主要指知识或思想以外的其他社会文化因素，包括阶级、社会地位、职业群体、代际关系、生产方式、权力结构、历史情境、竞争、冲突、流动，以及价值观、世界观、社会思潮、时代精神、民族精神、文化心理等。知识社会学所涉及的主要问题是知识或思想存在的基础、知识或思想存在的形态和存在的关系。当代知识社会学的发展，愈来愈走向经验研究，主要是研究知识的生产、储存、传播和应用。当代大规模的知识生产和传播，造成一种知识密集的社会。社会学愈来愈重视知识在社会发展、变迁中的地位和作用，并涉及知识或思想在社会政策的制定和实施等一系列问题。
