美术教学法研究美术教学的原理及其方法，是分科教学法之一。它的研究对象，包括美术教学的目的和任务、教学内容、教和学的方式、方法等。它以美术专业系统的知识、技能为基础，研究美术教学理论、探索其教学规律，用以指导教学实践，提高教学质量。美术亦称"造型艺术"或"视觉艺术"。通常指绘画、雕塑、工艺美术、建筑艺术等。在古代，中国和欧洲对绘画都有不少论述。特别是文艺复兴时期，欧洲的一些著名画家提出了写实主义的绘画法则后，这一法则对图画教学所起的支配作用，达四、五百年之久。他们提出了图画教学的一般任务，即发展学生的感官，助长学生的观察力，使学生认识事物等，这些主张为图画教学开拓了道路。后来的一些学校大都开始设立图画课。到了20世纪初，才出现了美术课的名称。中国清朝末年开始建立新式学堂。1904年 1月13日颁布的《奏定学堂章程》中，即明确规定在小学和中学均设图画课。在初级师范学堂的图画课中应讲"教图画之次序法则"。优级师范学堂设各科教授法课。其中包括图画教授法。1906年，两江优级师范首先创建了图画手工科，开始设有图画、手工、音乐等 3科教授法。中华民国时期，19颁布《新学制》，将教授法改称教学法,体现了教学合一的精神。1948年中、小学图画,一律改称美术。中华人民共和国成立后，1956年，复称图画。1979年重又改为美术；同时也发展了美术教学法。美术教学法大体上可分为：①学校美术教学法，如小学美术教学法、中学美术教学法等。②分类美术教学法，如绘画教学法、雕塑教学法等。③美术专题教学法，如美术鉴赏教学法、美术创作教学法等。美术教学法的研究。目前尚限于普通学校美术教学的研究,其主要内容可分为两个部分:①总论。包括:a.绪论，本学科的性质、系统、研究对象等。b.学校美术教育发展概况。c.美术教学的目的和任务，如使学生初步掌握美术基础知识和基本技能，对学生进行审美教育与德育，促进学生智力和才能的发展。d.美术教学的基本原则，如掌握审美原则；眼、脑、手协调并练原则；美术创造性原则等。e.美术课的组织形式和教学工作的基本环节以及组织课外美术活动的意义等。②分论。根据总论部分的基本原理，分别论述欣(鉴)赏教学方法（包括自然美、社会美、艺术美、建筑美等），绘画教学方法（包括临摹、写生、创作等），工艺美术及雕塑教学方法（包括图案、工艺美术、雕塑等）。1981年以来，中国已陆续有了从幼儿园到中等师范一整套的美术教材（美术试用课本），高等师范院校的美术系科，近两年也有大幅度的增长。
