流域流域drainagebasin由分水线所包围的河流集水区。分地面集水区和地下集水区两类。如果地面集水区和地下集水区相重合，称为闭合流域；如果不重合，则称为非闭合流域。平时所称的流域，一般都指地面集水区。每条河流都有自己的流域，一个大流域可以按照水系等级分成数个小流域，小流域又可以分成更小的流域等。另外，也可以截取河道的一段，单独划分为一个流域。流域之间的分水地带称为分水岭，分水岭上最高点的连线为分水线，即集水区的边界线。处于分水岭最高处的大气降水，以分水线为界分别流向相邻的河系或水系。例如，中国秦岭以南的地面水流向长江水系，秦岭以北的地面水流向黄河水系。分水岭有的是山岭，有的是高原，也可能是平原或湖泊。山区或丘陵地区的分水岭明显，在地形图上容易勾绘出分水线。平原地区分水岭不显著，仅利用地形图勾绘分水线有困难，有时需要进行实地调查确定。在水文地理研究中，流域面积是一个极为重要的数据。自然条件相似的两个或多个地区，一般是流域面积越大的地区，该地区河流的水量也越丰富。
